just installed trial, first folder encrypt fails
« on: November 21, 2012, 07:33:04 PM »
Hello!  I'm very excited to use Espionage 3, but it seems I've run into a snag even before getting started.  I downloaded and installed the trial, and the very first folder I try to protect results in the attached error dialog box.  I am also going to cut and paste the console contents in the case that it's helpful.  I hope this ends up being some trivial config issue, this software really is exactly what I need if I can get it to work!

Many thanks,

-Greg

Hello Greg, the key seems to be this:
failed copy of /Users/gchun/Documents/private into diskimage file://localhost/Users/gchun/Library/Ap ... arsebundle

you obviously wanted to protect a folder called private, what happens is:
- espionage creates a disk image, in file://localhost/Users/gchun/Library/Ap ... arsebundle, the missing part of the path is Application Support/com.taoeffect.espionage3/Tmp/longnumberdiksimagename.sparsebundle
- it copies the data from /Users/gchun/Documents/private into that disk image, then moves the original data into trash
- adds the folder with it's disk image and the folder as mountpoint to espionage
- unmounts the disk image

In your case the things got stuck at the part of copying the data, for some reason Espionage did not find the /Users/gchun/Documents/private any more, in the middle of copy.

Is the folder still there?
Is it a normal folder, anything special about it?
can you just try with a new test folder with one file in it?
if it fails can you reboot and try again.
do you have any resident programs like virus scanner or alike?
I see you have memeo backup I guess, but I don't see how that could interfere (although it does have some fseventer, to be able to do real time backups)
The whole thing is not much complicated at all and so far it is running stable for all users.

Let me know how it went.

Rgds

Hey Zsolt!

Thanks so much for getting back to me.  I tried creating a brand new folder with a single document in it, and that seemed to encrypt fine.  I don't really see any difference in the two folders...they are both sitting in the Documents folder and I guess the only difference I see is that the *new* folder, the one that worked, has the "@" at the end of its file permissions on the command line.  The permissions for "private" do not.  Would that have anything to do with it?

The "private" folder is still there and appears to be fine.  I have no virus scanner, just have my "os x" firewall turned on.  I'm not sure what memeo backup is...is that related to Time Machine?

Thanks!  Let me know what you'd like me to try next.

Hello Greg,

how big is this private folder?
can you make a duplicate of it and then try to add it to Espionage?
Or can you create a new folder and move all your files from the "Private" folder into this new one, then add that new folder to Espionage...

Did you reboot? (I know this is more like a Wiindows advice, but it does indeed helps sometimes, specially now when Macs are not shut down almost ever...)

Memeo is a backup application, sometimes comes bundled with external hard disks, it is kind of low level, as it monitors the file system changes in real time and backs up whenever a file is changed. Most of the time it makes sense, but in cases like this, when there are some temp files created, it is not needed.
I'm not sure if it interferes in any way, but I see it mentioned in the log you sent.

Just try what I wrote above.

Thanks
Zsolt

Problem solved!  In trying to copy the folder to another location, I discovered that one of the files in the folder was set to permission 700 with owner root.  As soon as I changed that, the encryption worked like a charm!

Thanks so much for your troubleshooting steps, Zsolt.
