Espionage 2 / Re: Anyone successfully backed up to Carbonite?
« on: September 01, 2011, 06:20:16 PM »
Hi RIch,

You're welcome. I'd recommend contacting Carbonite and ask if they support sparsebundle format, which is what we use for the encrypted disk images. It is possible that they might have a bug in their app or it was intentional for them to exclude it. Either way, they'd tell you.

I was able to restore from Time Machine.  As far as I know there was no system crash that I noticed.  All is working fine now.  Thanks.
Thanks for the update and confirming that it works fine now.

Hi Hector,

Thanks for contacting us. I just want to do a quick follow-up here to confirm that you are no longer having the issue after restoring the data from Time Machine.

In case, anybody is reading this: It looked like there was a system crash and the data was lost in a way that the address book was returned to a normal folder. Espionage was complaining about this since it was not encrypted anymore and Hector was able to restore the data by restoring from a backup via Time Machine.

This issue was resolved over email.

Hi Rich,

Are your folders bigger than 4GB? If they are, they will not be backed up by Carbonite as explained in their help article here:
http://carbonite.custhelp.com/app/answe ... efault.php

FIrst, we'd strongly recommend getting an external drive and use Time Machine as a local backup solution in addition to using Espionage to backup to the same external drive or to a second external drive. After that, you can use a cloud service to back up your files remotely. You'd want to locate a backup service that isn't restricted by the type of files you upload or the size. You can check out CrashPlan or Arq but mostly, many backup services will typically explain the type of restrictions upfront or in their help database.

You can find out more about our Backup/Restore information here: http://www.taoeffect.com/espionage/Espi ... ackup.html

I hope that helps a bit.

Espionage 2 / Re: Lion Mail easily bypasses encryption
« on: August 25, 2011, 05:21:00 PM »
Hi Rik,

We have bene searching for it but we know from many reports that there is no way to specifically turn this off for the system-wide crashes. You can however turn off the global resume setting, this can be done via System Preferences > General and uncheck "Restore windows when quitting apps and re-opening apps". For many Espionage users including myself, this wouldn't make a difference. It might help you.

Espionage should already launch Mail for you. To confirm this, you should remove Mail from the list of Logins Items in your Account. After that, open Espionage, unlock, select the Mail folder, then press the "Edit Application Associations"  and then make sure "Launch at login" is enabled for Mail. Here's what my email client, Sparrow, looks like:

Glad to hear that it worked out in the end and you're welcome.

HI Rik, I'm sorry that we didn't respond to you sooner.

This is a known issue because Lion prioritizes auto-saved apps over the other apps like Espionage and because of that, Espionage won't have time to unlock the folders before Mail.app opens. For any crashes, Lion will save the apps and then restore them upon restarting the machine, there is no way to turn this off. Since Mail.app opens with the folders locked, it looks as if there are no Mail folders, thus it ask you about recovery. If you restart your computer, please make sure to uncheck the "Reopen open windows when logging back in" option to avoid this situation as well. We're looking into a better solution into this.

Are you running 10.7.1?

If you're using MobileMe, that information is probably stored via your System Preferences > MobileMe. Because it is stored, Mail will set it up automatically and start downloading your emails without prompting. You have to turn this off in order to avoid Mail from doing it again in the future. Espionage doesn't prevent your password from being used to access your data, it can only password protect and encrypt your data. Here's the information from Mail's Help on how to stop it from using your passwords stored in your OS X Keychain:

Hi Zeradig,

mds and mdworker aren't related to Espionage, it's a part of the Spotlight feature on OS X. This is normal if Spotlight is indexing your drive or any sparse bundle files such as the encrypted folders.

If you click on Spotlight on top right, do you see Spotlight say that it is indexing anything?

Indexing takes a lot of power and usually it can take a while for it to finish. You should wait it out until it is finished. After that, it'll return to normal and it will not do that again for the same folder or drives.

Please let me know how it turns out.

Hi w2world,

You can download it from here: http://www.taoeffect.com/other/TEDiagnosticTool.app.zip [Marty linked it as "this" in his post, sorry for the confusion].

I hope that helps.

Espionage 2 / Re: Lost iMail functionality
« on: August 18, 2011, 12:06:40 AM »
Hi Nydo, welcome to the forums!

The "connecting to the server is failed" error, that's not something we see from Espionage. Is that error coming from Mail.app?

Please try to restore the folder back to normal and then encrypt it again. Open Espionage, unlock, and select the 'Mail' folder on the left side. Press the '-' button on the bottom to remove it off the list, which will restore it to normal folder. After that, repeat the process for the 'Mail Downloads' folder.

When you're done, please open Mail.app and see if it works normally.

If yes, please close Mail.app and then encrypt your Mail folders again by opening the main Espionage app, unlock and press the '+' button to select "Choose Application Template" and then select Mail.app again.

I hope that helps, please let me know.

« on: August 16, 2011, 06:37:12 PM »
Hi Klaus,

I'm sorry about the issues you're having with Espionage, it is due to an interference with another app or misconfiguration on your system that's causing it to damage Espionage every time you reboot. I replied to your email, please try the instructions in there to get Espionage to work again. After that, you can open Espionage, unlock and then go to the Espionage Menu > Uninstall Espionage to uninstall Espionage and also restore your data folders back to normal folders without the encryption. Just make sure that "Restore encrypted folders" is checked.

I'd like to suggest that you try rebooting the computer a few more time after trying the instruction, it might fix the issue for good.

Please let me know if I could be of further assistance.

Wow, that's strange. It sounds as if something is causing the EspionageHelper from starting upon launch. Without that running, Espionage will not work correctly.

Can you download our diagnostic tool here and then run it, it'll submit the report to us at the end. If not, it'll leave a file on the desktop that you can email to us at support@taoeffect.com

Please let me know when you send it, and I'll look into it. Thanks!

Espionage 2 / Re: Lion compatible?

Hi Adkim,

What kind of issues you're having with Espionage on Lion? Espionage 2.8.13 is the Lion-compatible version, please make sure you're up to date to ensure that Espionage will work the best on your system.
