Now this is quite embarrassing :-(
My deepest apologies for convincing you into something which is obviously wrong.
It seems we have some internal communication problems.
I will find out what is wrong and post you an update asap.
Sorry once again.

Dear Barsoom3

Would you be so kind to point me to the source of information which indicates that Espionage 3 is released, so that we can correct it.
Thanks in advance,

Hello, to put is simple, if you do not use encryption a machine which does not have Espionage installed, will enter into the folder without any problem.
So the pass protection is working find just in case somebody is accessing the folder from your Mac from your account, say, you forgot to lock the screen and somebody tries to open the folder.
I'm not sure if this is sufficient to you.
If you use encryption, then on the Mac and account which set this folder up, it will react on opening attempt and prompt you for password, on all other machines or users, the folder will not prompt for password, instead it will contain 3 subfolder named
This folder contains encrypted data
It is controlled by Espionage
Do not modify it in this state
and inside there will be a hidden encrypted disk image too, which will contain your data. So even if somebody figures out that there is a disk image, he/she still cannot open it without password.
So this is how it works for regular folders, in case of Drobpox all this applies too except that the setup should be done as per that blog entry you found.

Try to test, and if anything unclear just let me know.

Espionage 2 / Re: Feature request

Dear Triarius,

The operation of adding and removing folders is not something you do very often. More over, you are usually protecting data which is important to you. So it is better to do things step by step, and check if all is fine before moving on next folder. So while convenient, it might lead to bigger problems this is why I doubt this will be implemented.

Regarding unlocking all folders, if you mark the folder to unlock on logon, then it will, well :-), unlock at logon. If you mark all your folders this way, they will all unlock when you log on (and lock when you log out).

This might be something you like.

I hope this helped a bit.

Cheers

Espionage backup is just a copy of the disk image. The difference is only that this copy is never mounted, so you can run defragment at any time, even if the protected folders are open (as long as they are on a different disk than the backup)

Hello,

Espionage is using sparse bundle disk images to store protected files. Sparse bundle disk image is not one file, it is a collection of small files called stripes or bands packed in one OS X package. When changes to data in disk image happens (when you unlock the folder the disk image mounts and by adding/updating the files, you are updating the bands of disk image).

When the folder is locked, the disk image is unmounted and closed, sitting on your file system.
So I would say that you can safely run defragmentation of these files but to prevent Espionage kicking in, first lock all the folders and disable them in Espionage. Then run the defragmentation process. Once done, just enable the folders in Espionage and you are done.

If the backup is not set up in Espionage, and you have sufficient space on your disk to have all your protected folders copied, then I would advise you to set it up, you never know what can go wrong. Note that the backup will run the first time you unlock and then lock the protected folder. On the first run it will make a full copy of the data, so it might take some time, on subsequent runs it will copy only the differences, so it goes fast.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Espionage 2 / Re: Unable to encrypt Mail folder
April 30, 2012, 01:01:23 AM
Hello, I would say it is still that you run out of disk space when doing the encryption, see here

28/04/2012 03:10:21   com.taoeffect.EspionageHelper[169]   2012-04-28 03:10:21.507 copy-helper[30429:903] copy error (canceling): /Volumes/Mail/Mailboxes/IN FORMER/In - Former - Dec 2006.mbox/Attachments/644188/15/277R - MF.doc: No space left on device
28/04/2012 03:10:22   com.taoeffect.EspionageHelper[169]   could not access /Volumes/Mail/Mailboxes/IN FORMER/In - Former - Dec 2006.mbox/Attachments/644188/15/277R - MF.doc - No space left on device
28/04/2012 03:10:26   com.taoeffect.EspionageHelper[169]   hdiutil: create failed - No space left on device
28/04/2012 03:10:26   EspionageHelper[169]   ERROR (fixPermissions:88): couldn't set correct permissions on: /Users/mf/Library/.Mail.sparsebundle

Note that if you enable Espionage Backup, which I strongly advise, then it will take one more that amount of space on the disk. Or, alternatively, if all your accounts are IMAP accounts, then you have all the Emails stored on Server too, so in case of local data loss, you can simply resync your email.

Also, before trying to enycrpt the Mail folder, try the process with some small unimportant folder just to see if Espionage is healthy, as in the logs I see some general process related problems too.

Cheers,
Zsolt

Espionage 2 / Re: size restraint?
April 27, 2012, 01:34:44 AM
Hello,

Did you add the 8.5 GB folder to Espionage, or you added an empty folder to Espionage and then tried to copy the 8.5GB data into it?
If the later, then try the first approach. Pls make sure you have at least 8.5 GB free space on the disk, would better to have some more like 10GB.
Let me know if it worked,
Cheers,

For those interested in solution to this problem, here it is:

The reason the problem usually happens is the change of the home folder path. Espionage does not handle this well and tries to launch the helper using the original user home folder path. To fix this, you have to edit the preferences file:

/Users/[your username]/Library/LaunchAgents/com.taoeffect.EspionageHelper.plist

and set the

   <string>/Users/youroldhomepath/Library/Application Support/Espionage/EspionageHelper.app/Contents/MacOS/EspionageHelper</string>

to correct value.

Then log out, log back in and the helper should start.

Hello, did you try to reboot?
Any change you introduce which might have your problem as consequence?
Can you please check from terminal if these files/folder exists

Open terminal and write

ls -lR /System/Library/Extensions/iSpy.kext
ls -l /Library/iSpy
ls -l /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.taoeffect.ispyd.plist

and pls send me the output of these commands.

Thanks
