Reclaim unused space doesn't work
« on: August 13, 2012, 10:29:12 PM »
Hi guys,

I've always been happy with Espionage 2, until I lost all my data after upgrading to ML. I already had v3.0.1 but i wasnt using it then.
I had a backup of encrypted data on my time capsule from version 2, but restoration didnt work and I lost it all. Very upsetting. Backup image wouldn't mount. I made several copies of it, and tried everything including repairing one of those copies with disk utility.

Anyway, since espionage 2 apparently isnt for ML, I switched to version 3. I figured, I already bought it the day it came out, I might as well use it now that I'm on 10.8. So here's my question: I encrypted a folder and it automatically takes up 33 Gb, when the content is only 3.2 Gb inside.
I tried to reclaim that unused space with the appropriate button but nothing happens, i get a bunch of notifications from Growl telling me that "function is not implemented" or something.

How can I make that image smaller?

I also got this problem yesterday. I'm in the process of moving my data to a new MacBook Pro with 750GB SSD. Before transferring a big chunk of data, I decided to install Espionage3 on the new system and move my sensitive data first. I moved my 47GB onto Espionage and it allocates 469GB out of my 750GB. When I try to reclaim the unused disk space, I'm not allowed to.  I get the following error message:
"Alert! Error compacting image file. 'hdiutil: compact failed -function is not implemented'.
The last part of the error message was written in local language, so I tried to translate it correctly.

I can't afford to waste around 400GB of SSD unused. The rest of my data is insensitive, so I rather not place those files within Espionage3.

Is the compact functionality not working correctly in Espionage3 yet or I may have forgot som settings outside Espionage3.

Please help.

Dear Both, please allow me to test this tomorrow and I will come back with results.
I had a problem with compacting and it turned out that compacting is not allowed while you are running on battery power, I found this in the console messages, so please open the console, try to compact and let me know if some additional information shows up.
I will update tomorrow with results.

Rgds

I tried your suggestion and it seems to work (partly). It did compact (no error message). In the window where you can increase disk space or reclaim, it says 47GB now (0,5GB more than the actual data size). But in the folder view it's still wrong. With 47GB of data, the disk area still is 469GB. I've restarted Espionage3 and I've restated the MacBook Pro. It's still wrong in the folder view, buts it seems to be correct when you go into the "Adjust Folder Size" area.

Same here. It worked fine when my computer was plugged up to the power, it shows a small disk image in the app, but in the folder it's still the same size.

OK, so I took a 3GB folder full of small files, added it to Espionage, it created a disk image of 3.16GB in size (verified through Finder). When I click on adjust folder size I get "using 2.83GB of 27.28 GB available", "disk image has 2.83 GB of data and is 3.16GB in size on disk. Then I deleted some data out of it, to have 2.53GB size of data. The funny thing is that the size of the disk image in Finder grew to 3.35GB. Then I clicked on reclaim unused space and the size drop to 2.74GB.

Can you maybe do the same test on your Mac, if you have 4GB free space so that we see if this is a problem in general or only with that particular image?

Thanks
Zsolt
