Basically, here is what happened after recovering access to the folders under Espionage.

Logged into 10.6.8 which is running Espionage 2.8.13 and the folders were all back under Espionage without doing anything else.  Magic!

Now in the process of moving everything to 10.9 and Espionage 3.x.

Thanks for all your help.

I don't know what to do with .sparsebundle files.  When adding into Espionage, the files are usually in their original state of being a regular folder, not a sparsebundle.   Are you saying that the folders can be added into Espionage as already .sparsebundle?

I'll be consolidating to osx 10.9 when it comes out and then solely using Espionage 3.  Right now, I'm drifting between osx 10.6.8 and 10.7.5. However, due to this scare, will stop using Espionage 2 on osx 10.7.5 and use E2 solely on 10.6.8.

Still looking for directions on what to do with the .sparsebundles.
thanks.

First,  ;D

Second here is briefly what happened..

Ran the find command on the external drive which holds the folders and the Espionage backups.  The only folder with a .sparsebundle suffix was the one folder, Art, which had been removed from Espionage but indicated Failure with the Critical Alert.  The one folder had a path of /Volumes/Exp/Art/.Art.sparsebundle.   All the other folders had a path of /Volumes/Exp/xxxxx and each would request a password which resulted in a Critical Alert message.

Ran the open command on the Art folder, password accepted, the folder appeared on the Desktop, and a Finder window opened showing the contents of the folder. Yeah!
The mount command was not used since the folder appeared on the Desktop.

So, one by one, I removed the folders from Espionage and then ran the open command.  The folder which I thought I'd lose the updates has all the current info.

So happy.

What do I do next?

Environment...OSX 10.7.5, Espionage 2.8.13

Recently shutdown and one of the folders under Espionage was open.  The expectation is the folder would be properly closed.
But once back up, none of the folders under Espionage will open.  Did remove one folder from Espionage but got the same error messages.  But the folder is gone from the list in Espionage and the folder on the os side is now .xxx.sparsebundle.
There are backups of the folders but of course the one that was open will not be current.  Are those updates now lost?

Appears the info about Espionage 2 is no longer on your website, at least I could not find.  So really cannot work this out alone.  I've got the system message/console message is that would help.

Growl displayed messages are:
Critical Alert!
Failed to mount image for 'xxxxx'
Check the log (see Espionage Help menu) for more info.

Critical Alert!
Couldn't unlock 'xxxxx' because the image failed to mount!

These messages are occurring for all folders under Espionage when attempting to open with password or remove from Espionage.

I did find, using the Terminal app, under the /Volumes/EspionageMounts/nb/3790953693 there are two folders still there.  Is that where my last updates would reside?

thanks.

Espionage 2 / Re: cannot access folder

Have you tried removing the folder from Espionage control?   If that works, you could then re-add the folder back into Espionage.

This folder situation has been an interesting journey.  Although the folder came back and was working fine, about 2 wks ago the folder disappeared again.  And if I unlocked the folder, the folder would briefly appear in a Finder list but then promptly disappear.  The following info is posted in case someone else has a similar problem.

The first guess was the folder somehow had attributes set to be invisible.  This would be ok since the info would still be intake.
I downloaded TinkerTool which simply puts all the hard to find settings in OSX in one place. If you know where to change the setting in OSX to see hidden files/folders in Finder, you don't need TinkerTool.
Activated the "Show hidden and system files" and restarted Finder.

Sure enough, there was the Art folder with a . in front of the name.  All the files were there.
I decided to lock the Art folder, then remove the Art folder from Espionage.  The Art folder was still hidden afterwards.
Now the question became how to change the attribute.  I've done some UNIX support in my past so I started searching the web for commands to get more info.

Opened Terminal window/app.

executed  ls -al on the folder containing the Art folder.  I was particularly interested in the permissions info, "drwxr-xr-x@", and what does the @ mean came to mind.  The @ sign indicates there are other attributes set for a particular folder or file.
executed the following commands after creating a duplicate of the Art folder.

xattr -l Art   which resulted in the following output
com.apple.FinderInfo:
00000000  00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 04 00 00 00 00 00 00 00  |................|
00000010  00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00  |................|
00000020

xattr -d com.apple.FinderInfo Art
Since I've already done these commands to fix the problem, I don't have the output.  But the folder was no longer hidden after running the last xattr command and that is all I cared about at the time.

I actually deleted the backups for the folder under the Espionage Backups to start fresh.   Not sure that was necessary but wanted to start over with the backups since I had no idea how the folder got hidden in the first place.

Added Art back into Espionage.

So far all is back to working as usual.

Hope you find this helpful
Cheers.

Of course, this morning I start out to follow your directions about collecting the system log info and the Art folder opens just fine.  Believe since the original post and this morning, the macbook was rebooted with the external HD's connected.  Guess the recovery within Espionage worked just like it should.  The one file within Art folder looks fine.

Below is the system log entries when I originally tried to open the folder about 36 hrs ago.  I realize the problem is resolved but thought I'd post for informational purposes.

Thanks again for a great product and I'll be more careful about ejected HD's before pulling the cables. :)

Espionage 2 / Disconnected HD, now folder gone
October 13, 2011, 05:32:00 PM
I was in a hurry this morning and with the Macbook, 10.6.8, asleep, I pulled the cables for all the external HD's.  On one of the HD's were various folders being managed by Espionage 2.8.12.  The folder, Art, was probably locked but not sure.  The external HD was then reconnected to the Macbook later in the day which was still asleep.  The Art folder is not showing on the HD and will not unlock.  The system messages indicate a renaming problem which makes sense with the folder Art missing from the HD.

I don't know what to do to recovery the folder.  There are backups via Espionage of the folder but not sure of the steps since this problem has not occurred before.

I'm sitting here away from the desk working over wi-fi and notice the Espionage message "backups successful".  Then I realized the folder where the backups are sent is on an external hard drive which is not connected to the laptop via USB.  This sequence has happened many times.  Suddenly I had the thought "how could the backups be successful if the destination folder for the backups is not even connected to the laptop?"

Is the backup going somewhere within the application, which resides on the laptop, and then transferred later to the external hard drive when available?  Then I could see the "backups successful" message being correct.  Otherwise, backups should not be completing and a message indicating "destination folder not available, backups aborted" should be displayed.  Or some message indicating backups could not complete.

See where I'm going with this?  What is happening with the backups when the hard drive, containing the backup destination folder, is not available?

Environment Info:
SyncServices is unlocked at login. (this results in a backup being done every 3 hrs, see below).
Preferences/Backup -- When folder locked and every 3 hrs when folder is unlocked.
All folders on the unavailable external drive(s) are locked before disconnecting.
All other folders on the internal hard drive are locked during the above described event.

Espionage 2 / iPhoto - photos gone after encrypt
May 19, 2011, 01:35:30 AM
Decided to encrypt the iPhoto library but not working.

Open Espionage.
Click "+" to add by choosing application template option.
Selected Application template iPhoto.
Create new password for iPhoto.
"Encrypting folder" message appears on main panel of Espionage.
Process finishes with message indicating encryption done.  No errors.
On some attempts, there is an    "alert! Got error 24 backing up iPhoto Library.  It's recommended to re-run backups for this folder to ensure backup integrity."    as a backup is attempted right after the encryption is finished.
Open iPhoto application.
Password successful.
Then error from iPhoto...   "There is a problem accessing one or more files in your iPhoto library.  Do you want iPhoto to repair permissions for this library for you?"
Click on Repair.
Finishes with no errors.
But there are no photos.   All gone.
Close iPhoto.
Remove iPhoto from Espionage which indicates restoring files.  Finishes with no errors.
Open iPhoto.   no errors but no photos.
Close iPhoto.
Use Finder to locate iPhoto library location.  Move iPhoto folder from Trash to proper location in Finder.
Open iPhoto.  Photos are back.

SyncServices is unlocked all the time I'm logged in.
Mail and Mail Downloads are working ok under Espionage.
Locking/Unlocking iPhoto works but there are no photos.

I've repeated this process four times with the same results.  What am I missing?

Thanks.

Espionage 2 / Re: iDrive as Cloud backup
April 09, 2011, 08:26:42 PM
Working on a backup exercise at 2am is probably not the best time.
I went back and changed the setting for Excluding hidden files/folders to Allow hidden files/folders.  Removed iDriveDaemon from Whitelisted.  And the backup of the EspionageBackups runs fine.   :D

Espionage 2 / iDrive as Cloud backup
April 09, 2011, 03:11:49 AM
For a couple of months I've been backing up to the cloud using JungleDisk with no known problems.  JungleDisk is Whitelisted and selected the EspionageBackup folder (the location of Espionage's regular backups).  As a side note, when I look at the listing of files for Restores, EspionageMounts is listed but this folder was not selected for backups.  I'm guessing Espionage knows to include the folder since it is a hidden file, right?

Now I'm trying out another cloud backup company, iDrive.  Added iDriveforMac and iDriveDaemon to Whitelisted and selected the EspionageBackup folder.

So far nothing has worked to get the EspionageBackup folder to be backed up by iDrive.  Not sure what I'm doing wrong.  According to the backup log info, iDrive apparently sees the EspionageBackup folder as being a part of the excluded list which is true for hidden files.  I did try removing the exclusion for hidden files but that did not help.  Other files on the same external drive will backup to iDrive.

Thanks for your time.
