Hi Klaus1,

Did you get a message saying that Espionage is not supported on this Mac? Can you tell us which version of OS X you're running?

If it is Leopard, please download our most recent version that's supported for Leopard here, 2.8.10: http://www.taoeffect.com/espionage/rele ... 2.8.10.dmg

Open it, drag it to your Applications folder and allow it to overwrite your copy of Espionage. After that, run Espionage and see if that'll work better now. You might have reboot your Mac after running Espionage.

If you don't see your folders on the list, drag them from Finder into Espionage, that should decrypt them now.

Please let me know how it turns out.

Quote from: "nexus66"Thanks a lot for the quick answer. I wasn't scared too much - just wanted to decrease the log pollution after the lion upgrade
and this is not the only frequent warning. Thanks a lot for your very nice tool!

Cheers,

Hi Nexus,

We understand. I have gotten it myself as well when upgrading to Lion. Some of our users and myself managed to stop it from showing up by changing from Espionage Keychain to Login keychain and then back to Espionage keychain. Please try that and see if it'll help. Some reported it didn't work but others also reported that installing Lion cleanly without upgrading also helped and I can confirm this myself.

To change between Espionage and Login keychains, please open Espionage, unlock it and then go to its Preferences > Advanced. You can change it here. Please be cautious about remembering the password as some people can easily forget it when changing password more then once.

Thanks for understanding and you're welcome. It'd definitely be nice if we can support this, it'd make it a lot simpler to manage the folders as I like to drag and drop on the sidebar.

If we can be of further assistance, please let us know.

Hi minorjive,

The disk image will grow to the fixed size, it doesn't automatically reserve the space on the hard drive. In other words, it will only take up 30GB on the drive for now and it'll grow with the size of your Dropbox folder until it reaches 60GB.

Hi minorjive,

This is  part of the encryption process, the folder is deleted when you unlock and in its place, an alias ("virtual folder") is created to point to an encrypted disk image. When you tell Espionage to lock it, the alias is deleted and a new folder is created with the encrypted disk image stored within it. This is why it keeps disappearing off the sidebar.

There isn't a feasible way to force Finder to re-add the Dropbox folder on the sidebar. We'll look into finding a better way to work with protected folders on the sidebar. Right now, the easiest way is to go to the Documents folder first since Dropbox is always stored in there. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

Espionage 2 / Re: KeyChain Missing!
August 05, 2011, 01:20:05 PM
Hi,

Please try the following:
   1) Open Finder
   2) Choose Go > Go to Folder... in the menu bar
   3) Type or paste "~/Library/Application Support/Espionage" (without the quotes)
   4) Press return or click Go
   5) See if that'll help get you in there and if you don't see the keychain file, use Time Machine

Please let em know how it turns out.

Hi w2world,

Your Espionage keychain is supposed to be stored in the following directory:
Home > Library > Application Support > Espionage
If you're on Lion, the Library folder is hidden by default. Please open Finder and go to the Go menu, press the option key to see the Library folder show up on the Go Menu and select it. Then go to Application Support > Espionage. It should have a file called Espionage.keychain in it.

If not, see if you can restore it with Time Machine if you have it. It shouldn't disappear out of nowhere.

If you can't locate a backup copy, you can reset the password for the Espionage app but you'll need to provide individual folder passwords for the locked password. To do this, please follow our instructions here:
   viewtopic.php?f=6&t=99#p229

I hope this helps, please let me know.

Espionage 2 / Re: Corrupt Numbers document
August 04, 2011, 09:37:35 AM
Quote from: "DaveS"I tried all these remedies and none worked. The OLD file is not found in Time Mach and when I tried Recover with the three Esp folders that I described above, I now have lost the NEW file.

I know next time to turn your software off when upgrading my OS.

Thanks for trying to help.

Dave
Hi Dave,

I'm sorry to hear that it didn't work. I didn't realize that you have already created a new file and should've ask you to back it up before restoring.

I recommend using Espionage to back up your folders in addition to using Time Machine. This would ensure at least two copies you can try in the future.  For more information, please read our guide here.

I'm sorry that we couldn't be of any help here in restoring your file. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.

Espionage 2 / Re: Corrupt Numbers document

Hi Dave,

You won't see the Number documents because the folder is encrypted (no files will be shown until it is decrypted) and Time Machine backs up the folder at any given time, so it can be either decrypted or encrypted.

Restoring the folder or disabling Espionage for the specific folder does not change this for any of the old backups in Time Machine. When you see the "This folder..encrypted data", this means the folder is encrypted. You can tell Time Machine to restore to that folder and then drag that folder into the unlocked Espionage app. Espionage will then decrypt the folder for you and you should be able to see your old files normally in Finder.

I hope that helps. Please let me know.

Hi guys,

I'm sorry about this. As you guys have noticed, Espionage doesn't work well with the resume option. Lion is prioritizing the saved apps over the order of launched apps when it reboots. Because of this, Espionage is launched after the apps are resumed and this can cause crashes because the apps are now launched with locked folders. Espionage needs to be opened first in to order to unlock the folders before the apps are opened.

We're investigating to locate a solution that'll let Espionage be opened first before the saved apps but at this moment, please uncheck the option for restoring the apps when rebooting. I don't think there is a specific option to disable this for when Lion is crashing. I'll look into that. I do not have a timeframe on when we'll have something to fix this issue. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Hi Kyushu2002, welcome to the forums!

I'm sorry that we didn't get to you sooner. We've gotten really busy with all the support inquiries related to Lion.

The index file that is responsible for helping Finder locate your data with Spotlight is stored within the encrypted folders. So once it is locked, it can't be used to locate it because Finder won't be able to use the index files.

I'm not sure what's going on, is it possible what Finder was opening was from a different folder? It is also possible those files are in your Trash folder, this is done sometime to make sure Espionage can encrypt your data first before removing the files in the original folder. Be sure to empty the trash after you verified that you can access the files inside the locked folder.

Just to be sure, I just did this on Lion.  I did a search for specific files, I see them from locked folders and as soon as I lock the folder, the search results immediately refreshed with the data from the locked folder gone. So, it is working correctly on Lion.

You might find it helpful to see the file path to those files in finder. Open Finder, go to the View Menu > Show Path Bar. Do another search and select the file that's not supposed to be shown and look at the bottom, it should give you the path. Does it match the locked folder path?

I hope that helps. Please let me know.

Espionage 2 / Re: Espionage for Leopard

Quote from: "ljmac"I'm a bit confused as to which version I should be using with Leopard. You originally stated that 2.8.12 was the last version that would support it (and this info is still in your news section), but it seems that now you are recommending 2.8.10 for Leopard. Why is this?
HI ljamac,

I'm sorry about the confusion, we'll clear it up in the news section but our best supported version is 2.8.10 for Leopard users. Some Leopard users had issues with 2.8.12, so we pulled it and reverted to 2.8.10 as it is the best version to be supported on Leopard.

Espionage 2 / Re: Espionage for Leopard

Hi Ergo,

Espionage will continue to be supported on Leopard with Espionage 2.8.10 (download link here), we just stopped further development for it on Leopard but we will continue to support our Leopard users. Starting with Espionage 2.8.12, the minimal requirement is Mac OS X Snow Leopard or 10.6 and we support Lion with 2.8.13.

I'm sorry to hear you had issues with Snow Leopard but it is possible that Apple has resolved most of your issues with some of the updates that they have released for it. The general consensus is that 10.6.8 is very stable for majority  of Macs. You might want to try to do a clean install for it on your Mac. You'd have to update to Snow Leopard first before you can try Lion since Mac App Store is only available on Snow Leopard, unless you wait for the Lion USB stick that goes on sale next month.

Espionage 2 / Re: Post Espionage removal errors
July 14, 2011, 09:43:24 PM
Hi adcooper,

Those messages are not related to Espionage, it is part of the Intego app that you may have trashed a while ago. I'd recommend that you install the Intego app again and use their uninstaller app instead of trashing the app. For more information, please read their help article here.

I don't think this would cause your system to slow down that much. It may be something else.

When you removed Espionage, did you use our uninstall method or did you manually trash Espionage? If you trashed it manually and you still see some parts of Espionage showing up in the Console app; you can download our app again from our site, install it and then when Espionage is installed, open it, unlock it, then go to the Espionage Menu > Uninstall Espionage to uninstall it fully.
