Espionage 3 / Time Machine clarification
June 13, 2012, 12:41:55 AM
Espionage 3 announcement mentioned that this new version works better with Time Machine. I tried to make some sense out of this and out of what I observed by examining Time Machine backups, and I have a few questions?

1)when the encrypted folder/image is unlocked/mounted, will Time Machine back up its unencrypted contents?
2)does the above folder/image need to be, or can it be, excluded from TM backup via TM options?
3)does the image itself (the .sparcebundle file in Espionage library folder) need to be locked for TM to back it up, as was the case with Espionage 2 built-in backup?
3)TM is supposed to do incremental backup, does it also work with Espionage .sparcebundle files, i.e. images located in Espionage 3 library folder? In other words, if I have 1000 files in the folder taking up 1Gb, but only one of the files changes - will TM back up the whole 1Gb, or just a segment?

I have been using Espionage 2 for a while and now also have Espionage 3, both work fine with occasional hiccups, nothing drastic so far.

The Espionage 3 announcement recommended using FileVault 2 for encrypting application data. But in my case I have 4 users on one Mac, and only one user has something worth encrypting, while two other users are kids and I don't want them entering passwords or being involved in encryption in any way. So my questions are:
1) will FileVault 2 work for this multi user arrangement described above?
2) if yes to 1, will there be a performance penalty?
3) if yes to 1 and no to 2, why use Espionage at all rather than just FileVault?
4) can I run both Espionage 2 and 3 at the same time, 2 for applications and 3 for other data? So far it seems to work OK
5) the update to Espionage 3 promised to allow Library folder encryption, and I don't mind manually unlocking those folders - are there any other reasons not to use Espionage 3 for application encryption and ditch Espionage 2?

Espionage 2 / Espionage with Yep
June 16, 2010, 06:42:32 PM
I recently purchased Espionage (after some experimentations  :geek:  with FileVault and Mac OS encrypted disk images). I really like the way it makes the whole process easy and stays out of the way.
I also use Yep http://www.ironicsoftware.com/yep/index.html (another good app) for managing electronic documents, which are stored in Espionage managed encrypted folder.
The problem is that Yep is unable to display the folder structure in that folder. It can find the documents themselves, and display the correct file path in the status bar, but the panel that is supposed to show the subfolders does not do it. Yep did not have this problem with FileVault, but it got even worse with manually created Mac OS disk images.

I posted a thread on Yep's forum (http://ironicsoftware.com/community/comments.php?DiscussionID=1702&page=1#Item_6), but haven't got a reply from developers yet.
I believe it is more of a Yep's problem rather than Espionage's, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. It would be great if these two excellent apps learned to work with each other.
