Title: Espionage 3.. disappointing..
Post by: aj_cairo on December 21, 2012, 07:00:22 PM
HI..
I bought Espionage 3 after i watched the ad video of Espionage 2.. and the greatest feature was encrypting applications.. now to my surprise the version 3 doesn't support such a function!! very very disappointing..So I wonder about the following issues:

1-I've paid for a lifetime upgrade key.. is there any possibility to install Espionage 2 instead and use the same key?
2-If not, can i get refunded and then buy Espionage 2 ?
3-Would there be any problems uninstalling espionage 3 and replace it with espionage 2?
4-I need a link to download Espionage 2..

Hello, indeed, I felt the same way when I saw Espionage 3 for the first time, but after using it (and supporting it) I realized that the design decisions were not that bad as they appear at first.
In Espionage 3 you to decide on your own which folders you want to protect, and for some users this might be a difficult task as not everybody knows where does the application keep its data, but you can always ask me :-)
On top, the protected folders will not lock once you quit the application, which appears as a security issue, but this is feature is important only in one case: you leaving the Mac unattended without a password protected screen saver AND with the protected application NOT running, yes, indeed, in this, but only this case, Espionage 2 will protect you better then 3. However, normally, it is very probably that the protected application will be launched, so in this case Espionage 2 will not protect you either. And you should not leave the Mac unlocked, if you feel you have sensitive data on it.
On the other hand, Espionage 3 is much simpler in design it has less complex process correlation and therefore it is less prone to problems. Also, it is Espionage which creates the folder passwords for you, which are far stronger then you would ever create and it does not make you remember password for each folder, just one, and this is to open Espionage. If you set  Espionage to launch at login and the folders to unlock at login, then all the data will be protected on your disk in case someone steals the Mac.

But now I will stop preaching, this all is just my personal opinion.
To your questions, all is possible:

1-I've paid for a lifetime upgrade key.. is there any possibility to install Espionage 2 instead and use the same key?
2-If not, can i get refunded and then buy Espionage 2 ?
3-Would there be any problems uninstalling espionage 3 and replace it with espionage 2?
4-I need a link to download Espionage 2..

We will gladly refund you your purchase if your are not a happy user, considering you paid for lifetime upgrade option, you actuall do own an Espionage 2 key too, we just need to generate if for you, uninstallation of espionage 3 is quite simple, just delete the application, and the espionage 2 you can download from www.taoeffect.com (http://www.taoeffect.com)

Let me know your comments,

I'm very thankful for simplifying this technical problem.. I'd like to point that I agree with you about the facilitation and advancement in encryption that espionage 3 had brought.. However, it's very essential for me to use application encryption...

Now, please advice:
1- how can I get my "lifetime" key for Espionage 2.
2- just to make sure, the size of the dmg file for Espionage 2 is 5.9M compared to 3.2 M for Espionage 3?

regards,
AJ

and just to be clear, uninstalling espionage 3 is by moving it to the trash from application folder?

Hello, this size does not matter (in this case :-)

Just select the application icon and go to Finder's -> File -> get info, and in the pop up window look for the application version.
Unfotunatelly both V2 and V3 are named Espionage, however, the V2 you get from taoeffect.com whereas the V3 you get from espionageapp.com
Pls mail me your email and name onto taoeffect@macmesupport.com, and once I verified you in our license database, I will generate and send you the version 2 license.

Yes, the V3 you just quit, from menu item padlock, and then move the application into trash.
