Hello, one simple try, can you switch the OS theme to light instead of dark and see if that changes anything. If it does not, please open a ticket with us and I will look into this thorough a zoom session if all right with you.

Espionage 3 / Espionage authenticates but wo...
Last post by Elusis - March 11, 2025, 07:19:56 PM
I just moved from a 2021 Macbook Pro to a new Macbook Air, running an M3 chip and Sequoia 15.3.1. My encrypted folders seem to have come over just fine but when I opened Espionage to get to one of my folders, I found an odd error. I can authenticate to get access, but then the dropdown menu from the menu bar is empty, rather than showing my folders to individually unlock.

I checked for updates but it says I'm current.  Any thoughts?

Sorry, can't seem to get my image to show - it's here https://imgur.com/a/HYruK3K

Hi,

I have been reading through these Forum posts and I fear I am making my situation worse and worse. I have been trying to migrate and restore my data fro my old MacBook Pro to my new one. I thought I restored and transferred it but now when I tried to open it up it placed the sparsebundle in the Trash and left an empty Rescued items folder.  I tried using directions to find the password but that didn't work either. I also tried to go back to my old computer and Time Machine backups to see if I could restore my data there but Espionage now tells me that I don't have the correct version to open those backups. I am completely Please help.

Hello, the sparsebundle on it's own is not enough. But if you have a backup of your home folder, then we should be able to find the rest what is needed.

Each protected folder needs 3 pieces of info:

1 the disk image which contains the data
2 the mountpoint folder which will be used to display the data
3 the Espionage database which contains the path to the first two, the name of the first two and the password of the disk image

So to make espionage recognise your folders you have to move all this data to a new machine.
The 1 and 3 are all in one folder:

yourhomefolder/Library/Application Support/com.taoeffect.Espionage3

On the backup disk, find the backup session you want to restore from (directly on the backup disk, not through time machine), the Libary folder will again be hidden, you select "Go" menu from the Finder's menus, and in the popup window start to type Library, Finder will fill it out for you till the end, just click OK and you will enter into the library, then again just continue till you find the com.taeoeffect.Espionage3 folder

Once you put this folder into the same path on the new Mac, launch Espionage and all your folders should be present in Espionage folder list.

It might still complain about missing mountpoint folders, then just create an empty folder for each protected folder, click onto small "i" near the folder name in Espionage folder list and use the mountpoint drop down menu to point Espionage to the newly created folder, after that it should start to work,

Let me know how it went,

Cheers

Hello Scott, I'm glad this did the trick. It is not 100% nice solution as we do not know what exactly the problem with the original folder was. Usually it is some kind of a permission problem. But the sudden unmount was never reported before. Failing to recover properly that yes.
But I can see that you understand it quite well, so I guess we do not need to be worried.
If you have any specific question, please let me know.
And no, there are no error logs, we do write some stuff into console, but I never found anything useful there. You might want to search for diskutil entries, as that is the process doing the mount and unmount part.

I created a new folder.  It worked.

I then I attempted to decrypt the problem folder, but that failed leaving an empty "_Rescued Items" folder.  I was able to manually mount the old sparsebundle and copy the data to a new location.  Then I dragged the new folder into Espionage and let it set up a new encrypted folder; this worked.  The new folder now mounts within Espionage as it should.  I am a little concerned that perhaps I might be missing some recently added files... I will have to check a recent backup just to make sure that everything is there and the failed decryption did not whack anything.

I still find it rather odd that there was a problem in the first place.  Is there an error log that I can check?

Hello Scott, did you try to create a new folder and see if it behaves the same?

If the problem persists with the old version, I'm not sure what to tell you. It sounds like there could be some other software installed on your system that's interfering with Espionage, unmounting the images that it's mounting.

If you email support@taoeffect.com you can try to schedule a remote session with our tech team to troubleshoot more.
