Hello Olturot,

Yes, this issue is known to us.

Can you please try the following workaround and let me know if it works for you:

Once you want to save the document into the encrypted folder, you go to save as, and in the save dialog select the parent folder of the target, encrypted folder and then hold command+shift keys and hit G key. This is in fact "go to folder" command in the Finder, but works in every save dialog too. This will make another pop up window open, waiting for the path to be entered. Now just write a few letters of the name of the target encrypted folder (case sensitive) and wait few seconds, OS will figure out where do you want to go and fill the full path in for you. Now just hit enter and you will be inside your encrypted folder.
Then simply click save and you are done.
Even better, if you now want to save another document, the application will remember your last save location and there is nothing to do, you will already be in your target folder.

It seems that the reason behind this is that some application try to act smart and do not take symlinks for granted, but try to elaborate them deeper. To the best of my knowledge this is MS Office and Adobe Professional, this is what was reported so far.

The dev team says that the upcoming version 3 of Espionage will not have this problem because of different concept it is using.

Cheers,
Zsolt

Espionage 2 / Re: Lion problems?
March 26, 2012, 10:59:04 PM
Hello zultar,
Can you please collect the diagnostic report as described here viewtopic.php?f=3&t=434, attach it to your post or open a support ticket with it, and then I will see what does it say.
Please collect it when Espionage is running, I know it is hard but if it is not running then the files will be less good.

What you could as well do is to disable the folder(s) in Espionage so that it is running but it does not control the folders. Do not remove the folders from espionage, this will restore them back, just disable them and use your mac for a while, see if it is OK.

If all fine, you can do one more step, and this is to download ivisible (http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24682/ivisible) make your invisible files visible, and then go into the encrypted folder (which is still not enabled in Espionage). You will see a hidden disk image named same as the folder. Doubleclick it to mount, enter password, and use it as normal. See if the Mac is still stable.

Let me know how it went.
Cheers

Espionage 2 / Re: Case sensitivity

Hi, I have to check with developers. I see a small possibility of:
- giving an (emtpy) folder to Espionage to encrypt
- creating by hand a disk image with same characteristics (name, size, encryption) as Espionage did, except selecting different filesystem type)
- disable the folder in Espionage
- delete the Espionage created folder and replace it with the one you created
- enable the folder in Espionage
I guess Espionage would not realize the hack and would accept the disk image as its own (child :-))

I will see with developers if they have anything to add and let you know.

Espionage 2 / Re: Case sensitivity
March 24, 2012, 01:05:08 PM
Hello,
Espionage is using MacOS Extended file system for disk images. If you would create a disk image using MacOS Extended Case sensitive, then it would be, well, case sensitive :-).
But not sure what is that good for, because as soon as the file is copied on your local disk it is landing onto non case sensitive file system, so it is OK to rely on case sensitivity only in strictly controlled, environment.

Espionage 2 / Re: Encrypt ONE email folder
March 20, 2012, 01:02:28 AM
Dear All, here is the summary of this post:
Customers request was a bit unusual
- he wanted to be able to hide away one folder in his email client but let other folders be readable.
- The reason for this was that he gives his Mac to coworkers to process his nonconfidential emails, but want to hide away the confidential ones.

I gave it a try by creating a local folder in the Apple Mail and drag the confidential emails into that folder. This moved the emails out of the mail account, and into the local folder.
Then I protected this folder in espionage.

If I would start mail while the folder was locked, it was not possible to access the emails, but the from and subject field were still visible if I would click on the local folder in Apple Mail. So it was partially OK.
If the folder would be unlocked when starting Mail then all would be normal, mails completely accessible.

HOWEVER: on subsequent testing it was not behaving completely consistent.

So this might work, if you are OK with the fact that the subject and from field are visible, but would require some more testing.

Doing this in MS Outlook for Mac was not possible due to folder structure, which is hardly human readable i.e. predictable, you will not know which folder to protect because the folder names on the disk and in Outlook are completely different.

#################

However, considering the subject and from field was visible, customer was not satisfied so finally we created an additional email account, customer would drag the public email to the other account, and protected his entire email folder.

In this way the coworkers were processing the email using their own mac and accessing the email through the public email account and all the emails on the "main" mac were completely protected.

Dear Chimp, your post is rather long with many questions, but here is what I would say:
- once you understand how Espionage works, you will probably get answers to all your questions, and will be able to test safely to see if it works for you.
If you add a folder to Espionage (you cannot add files, just folders), what Espionage does is:
- it creates a sparse bundle encrypted disk image (just as you could with Disk utility), with the password you provide
- copies the content of the folder you added into that disk image
- moves the original folder into the trash
--------
There is a background process called Espionage Helper (plus a low lever device drive called iSpy) which monitor for activity on the folders protected by Espionage
- if espionage detects a request for the protected folder, it will pop up a window for password, you provide it, it mounts the disk image and creates a symlink to the folder, and the access to the folder is then granted
- another variation of the same thing is when you create an application association for the particular folder. In that case, the background processes will not only react on access attempt, but also on application launch attempt. So if you protect a folder, and add Evernote as application association, then whenever you start Evernote, the background process will detect this, prompt for folder unlock, and once correct password is provided, it will allow the application to finish launching.
- finally we come to application protection, or application templates: these are nothing else then a predefined list of folders. So if you say, want to protect Apple Mail, then the Library/Mail folders will be automatically added to the Espionage.

I hope it was clear so far.

So, first of all, if you want absolute control on every detail, do not use the templates, ie. do not protect the application instead select the folders on your own, of course, you must know what you are doing.
Second, at first step, do not use application association, instead before launching the application, unlock the folders manually.

So if upon defining the folders by hand, and unlocking the folders by hand, you manage to start the application successfully, and it works without a glitch, then we are on a good track. Test it for a while. Once sure all is fine. Add to all of the folder you tested with, the application association for application you tested with.

Then test again, the only difference to the previous stage is that you will not need to unlock the folders by hand.

###############

Finally there is one more point: if the Espionage app is open, i.e. you opened it by providing the master password, you will not be asked for password for each folder you protected. If it is not open, then you will be asked......

So I guess you have now all the info to start testing. Give it a try and let me know how it goes. If you encounter an anomaly then let me know and we will try to figure out what went wrong.

Looking forward to hear from you,
Cheers

Hi Tom, I just tried it and it works as expected. As soon as I click on the Espionage icon in Launchpad, Launchpad goes away and Espionage window comes in front, I enter the password and all is fine.
I tried to launch Launchpad from the Dock, Alfred and Finder, it always works in the same way.

Can you please try to log in with another account (guest for example) onto your Mac and try to reproduce it there?

Thanks
Zsolt
