Espionage 2 / Re: Trial ran out Can't acces files.
June 01, 2012, 12:04:14 AM
Hello Crea,

It would be good to determine which version you are running. As V3 is out only couple of days and has 14 days of trial period, I guess you have V2, but please confirm and then I can give you further instructions.

You should not get the spinning wheel though, but we will see...

Espionage 2 / Re: Future of Version 2
June 01, 2012, 12:00:13 AM
Hello,
The V2 will be maintained and fully supported for the time being. It was tested with Mountain Lion so it seems there is more life to it for a while.
But I don't believe there will be new features introduced in V2, the focus is on V3.
The application association is already considered for V3 too, but at this moment we have to be absolutely sure that the base code is rock solid and then we will move on. When and with which features is not set yet, but rest assured that we will not sit idle :-)

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Espionage 3 / Re: Clarification requested
May 29, 2012, 11:46:09 PM
Hello Harringg,

You are correct, the application protection, i.e. the automatic unlock and lock when an application is lauched/quit is not present in V3.
The application protection started to become a challenge to maintain it working perfect so the V3 focused on being simple and reliable for a start. The application protection might show up again in future revisions but for the time being it is not there.

If you use a screen saver with password then your mac should be protected whenever started and you are not present, or if you put it to sleep and it requires password upon wake. If you log out or shut down, the V3 will lock the folder so you are safe again. If you use the unlock on logon option then you do not have to remember to unlock the folder before starting the app.

Indeed, it is not so convenient as in V2. So you can give it a second thought or stick to V2 for the moment.

Let me know if you have further questions.

EDIT: as mentioned below, Espionage 3.5 makes this much easier now.

Yes, just restore the folder using V2 and then add them to V3. Please make sure you have sufficient disk space to restore the data as during the process you will need twice the disk space of protected folder(s)

Espionage 2 / Re: Espionage and Hazel

Hello pdadoc,

It might be that Hazel does not like symlinks which is the mechanism Espionage uses to link the folder to mounted disk image.
First could you try the same thing but with a file which is in the protected folder and move it into another folder inside protected folder, does that work?
Second, how do you specify the destination folder to Hazel? Try instead of specifying the original folder path (which is a symlink) point it to the mounted disk image?
Pls give it a try and let me know.

Hello, the backup will occur each time the folder is locked, this is the default behavior if you enable the backups. Considering your Mail folder is associated with Mail app, the folder will lock whenever you quit Mail, again, this is the default behavior.
So far it is clear.
Why it does not happen, I do not know yet, the message would indicate problem with Espionage Helper (I guess), although it does not say which helper it is about and there are several on Mac OS X. So the first thing to check is whether the helper is running, pls open activity monitor and search for Helper and see if Espionage Helper is running. However, I expect it to be there because otherwise the folder unlock would also not work.
Did you try to log out and log back in, or simply restart your Mac?

Dear Barsoom3

The site was up only for internal demo and testing, but obviously you were on the right place in the right time :-)
Version 3 is about to be released but it is not out yet. The copy you have is OK, you can use it if you want. To use it with folders protected under Espionage V2, you simply restore the folder within Espionage2 back to normal, and then add them to Espionage3, there is not direct migration path because the technology used is quite different.

I hope this helps.

And good luck in searching the invisible on the net :-)

Now this is quite embarrassing :-(
My deepest apologies for convincing you into something which is obviously wrong.
It seems we have some internal communication problems.
I will find out what is wrong and post you an update asap.
Sorry once again.

Would you be so kind to point me to the source of information which indicates that Espionage 3 is released, so that we can correct it.
Thanks in advance,

Hello, to put is simple, if you do not use encryption a machine which does not have Espionage installed, will enter into the folder without any problem.
So the pass protection is working find just in case somebody is accessing the folder from your Mac from your account, say, you forgot to lock the screen and somebody tries to open the folder.
I'm not sure if this is sufficient to you.
If you use encryption, then on the Mac and account which set this folder up, it will react on opening attempt and prompt you for password, on all other machines or users, the folder will not prompt for password, instead it will contain 3 subfolder named
This folder contains encrypted data
It is controlled by Espionage
Do not modify it in this state
and inside there will be a hidden encrypted disk image too, which will contain your data. So even if somebody figures out that there is a disk image, he/she still cannot open it without password.
So this is how it works for regular folders, in case of Drobpox all this applies too except that the setup should be done as per that blog entry you found.

Try to test, and if anything unclear just let me know.
