Title: app crashed and will not start up again
Post by: akesp on April 26, 2014, 06:45:07 PM
Installed Espionage app a couple days ago on my Mac Mini OSX 10.8.5 for the 14 day trial. Have locked 3 folders and am experimenting with how things work. But app crashed and would not start up again for some reason - no messages or warnings. Rebooted machine and the app came up asking for my password which I entered. But nothing happened, and the app is not running - nor will it start again when I try to get it to run from Spotlight search.

So my 3 folders are locked and unavailable to me. This is quite distressing. What should I do?

Hello, first we have to determine if Espionage indeed crashes or not.
Please start Activity monitor, from the "View" menu, select "All processes" and in the search field entere Esp and see if Espionage will come up as running process.

If it does not, then please launch Console, select either All messages or System messages and try to launch Espionage again, see if the logs show some messages related to Espionage.

Do you get a pop up window saying that Espionage crashed?

So far we got no report on crashes, so I find it a bit unusual that this happens to you.

Once you reply, we will try to figure out how to get the data back.

thanks for your response - yes the Espionage process is running as PID 901 - no I did not get any popups or messages about a crash but I do not see how to access it any more - it used to be on my top bar on the very left side - wait, it is there! only in a different position for some reason and I did not recognize the lock icon you use - Ok I should be good now, sorry for the fright :(

Also, when I tried to re-launch Espionage, I got no response - would have been good to switch focus to the icon at that point maybe?

And after I rebooted and typed in the password, I again got no response - and because I did not see/recognize the icon in the top bar I was fooled into thinking it was not available to me. Maybe some UI tweaks here would be helpful. Just my 2cents ...

I'm glad we sorted this out. Yes, I will file a request for enhancement where we will point you to the padlock icon when you launch the application for the first time, however this would not help in your case, as it is the subsequent launches where you did not realise that the padlock is there, and we cannot move the focus to it every time it launches, as by default it launches on login...but we will give it a thought.
