This didn't seem to be an issue under Snow Leopard, but searching for anything in Mail, under Lion, gets no results. Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks.

In looking at the problem more closely, it seems that some of the 'On my Mac' folders are the ones not getting indexed.

Sometimes the Spotlight index can get corrupted for whatever reason. You can try resetting it by doing the following:

  • Unlock the Mail folders
  • Open up the Terminal application
  • Copy/paste this line into the terminal window (including the final trailing space):
    mdutil -E
  • Open the Mail folder in the Finder and drag the folder icon that's in the window toolbar (at the top of the window) onto the terminal window. (See this post to see a screenshot of a similar situation, also Spotlight related, to see what I mean by the dragging).
  • In the terminal window, hit the Enter key to run the command

In the end the command that's being run should look something like this (except instead of my username, it will be yours):

mdutil -E /Volumes/EspionageMounts/gslepak/229098097/Mail
That will reset the Spotlight index for the Mail folder. Leave the computer on for some time to allow Spotlight to reindex your email.
