Espionage 2 / 2 Kernel Panics
July 09, 2009, 04:15:33 AM
I tried launching Adium and i got a Kernel Panic (this was the second in 2 days, both involving Espionage). I haven't had a KP in over a year.

First one:

Espionage 2 / Growl
July 09, 2009, 12:39:59 AM
Decided to use Growl for notifications and turn off the built in ones and I'm not getting Growl ones. Everything is turned on properly in both Espionage and Growl (1.1.5), but nothing. Other Growl notifications from other apps are working properly.

Espionage 2 / Growl notifications not turning off
July 05, 2009, 09:07:34 AM
I initially had Growl turned on for notifications, but I decided to revert back to the apps internal notifications, so I unchecked "Use Growl for Notifications." I kept getting them. SO I went into Growl and turned off both Espionage apps in there. Was unchecking the option in Espionage supposed to accomplish this?

I lock Mail. I also use Carbon Copy CLoner to do rotated backups. I also perform a few scripts within CCC, a pre script that tells all running apps (except for CCC and the Finder) to quit before it does it's backup. That way all programs that are running that use Espionage have the chance to quit and have their data folders re-locked. Then CCC does its backup, then runs a post script that emails me the log report for the backup so I can take a look at its operations when I'm at work (the backup occurs while I'm away). You can see where I'm going with this:  When the post script attempts to open Mail it will inevitably get the dialog box asking for a password and this is where it will fail.

I was wondering if I could embed within the Applescript to pass a password to Espionage's Dialog so as to let Mail run It's kind of like how you can mount shared volumes with an AS by embedding the username and password within the script.

I know Espionage doesn't currently offer such a thing, but I cannot wrap my head around how this could even be achieved without leaving a huge security whole (unless I script some Apple Events that type into the dialog box. But I'm not even sure the Espionage password entry dialog box is standard OS X fair).

I guess the other option would be to download another email app like Thunderbird and maybe script it if it has a scriptable library. I was hoping to avoid this.

I know Espionage has built-in backups but I have to stick to CCC as I need bootable clones.

Espionage 2 / Mail as a login item unlocked itself.
July 05, 2009, 01:09:25 AM
I started my mac tonight when i got home from work, and one of the login items is Mail. I walked away from the computer to let it boot up and load everything, and came back to it and Mail was running. If I manually quit and relaunch Mail, it does ask me for my password.

Any ideas?

Followup: I noticed that "Autounlock at login" was checked so I am guessing that is the reason. However, why would anyone want that feature? If they want their data secured, a simple reboot of the machine would unlock all their data without any user interaction. Seems strange.

Espionage 2 / NeatWorks
July 05, 2009, 01:01:18 AM
I have an app called Neatworks, that allows me to scan in all my receipts and vital documents, and it turns them into PDF's and catalogs them. It stores it's data in a file called Neat Library.nrmlib located in the Documents folder. This "file" is really a package that contains all the PDF files it creates. SO I added the file (I guess it saw it as a folder/package), then I associated it with the app.

Launched Networks and it asked for my password, then mounted the image on the desktop. However, Neatworks then gave me an error that it cannot read from a read only image.

Any ideas?

Followup: So I undid the protection in Espionage; it said it was unlocking things and restoring things back to normal, and when I re-opened Neatworks, it gave me the same error... that it was read only. Something went wrong in the lock/unlock process. Fortunately, I restored the file from the Trash and it works again.

FYI, the file that it read as "read-only": I checked it in the Finder and it said it was not locked, so I'm not sure why the app thinks it is read only.

Espionage 2 / Address Book questions
July 05, 2009, 12:55:17 AM
I see that you have a template for Address Book, but I am wondering about the fact that Address Book's data is utilized by so many other programs that I have, such as Mail, Adium, iChat, Yahoo, Delicious Library, Neatworks, iPhoto, iTunes, Safari and LaunchBar off the top of my head. (Not to mention Mobile Me). How do I make this work?

Another issue: I tried adding address book to the list, and it said to make sure address book wasn't running.. it wasn't. SO I gave it a password, and clicked GO. Then it told me that MAIL was open and asked me if I was sure I wanted to proceed. So does that have to do with what I was asking above (I had Adium and LaunchBar running when I tried this, so I quit them but still Espionage thought it was in use.) Will Espionage automatically know when an app requires access to Addy Books data? Or do I have to add each application under "Associations."

I quit Mail, was able to add Address Book, and I saw that it had some built-in associations, and I added a few more. I launched Adium as a test and it asked me for a password to access Address Book. Entered. Unlocked. Then I quit Adium and the Address Book Data folder was still unlocked, even though Adium's settings were "Lock on Quit."

When I tried to relock the folder manually, it gave me an error that the app iTunes appears to be running, which it isn't (Does it think it is because the helper app iTunesHelper is running in the background?

Espionage 2 / Quicken Protection
July 05, 2009, 12:53:14 AM
I went to add the Quicken and its associated data folder, and it told me that the application Quicken did not appear to be an Application Bundle. SO I tried it nonetheless, and it locked up everything. WHen I launched Quicken ,it asked me for the Espionage password, and unlocked the folder. Everything worked. However, when I quit Quicken, it did not relock the folder.

Any ideas?

Espionage 2 / 14 Day Trial....
July 04, 2009, 02:49:14 AM
So I just downloaded Espionage to get it a whirl, and if in the off chance I do not like it or like it and forget about the 14 day limit, will it just stop working and leave all my data locked, or will it decrypt everything before it cripples itself?
