Quote from: "ravedog"Followup: I noticed that "Autounlock at login" was checked so I am guessing that is the reason. However, why would anyone want that feature? If they want their data secured, a simple reboot of the machine would unlock all their data without any user interaction. Seems strange.

Please see my response to you in this thread for why this is a desirable feature.  You should have auto-login disabled (from the Accounts System Preferences), then they wouldn't be able to access that data.

Espionage 2 / Re: Address Book questions
July 05, 2009, 12:58:04 PM
Thanks, this is a great question.

QuoteThen I quit Adium and the Address Book Data folder was still unlocked, even though Adium's settings were "Lock on Quit."

If any of the other application associated with the folder are running it will not lock the folder.

QuoteWhen I tried to relock the folder manually, it gave me an error that the app iTunes appears to be running, which it isn't (Does it think it is because the helper app iTunesHelper is running in the background?

Yes, we're not quite sure what to do actually in this case... as helper applications often access the same data as their parent applications.  Read on for my advice...

Quote from: "ravedog"Will Espionage automatically know when an app requires access to Addy Books data? Or do I have to add each application under "Associations."

No.

QuoteHow do I make this work?

If you used the latest version of Espionage (2.0.8) to setup Address Book, it should have already setup up everything properly.  As you point out, Address Book's data is accessed by an innumerable number of applications, and therefore the solution to this problem is to make sure that its data is always unlocked while you're logged in.  Hence the 'auto-unlock at login' option that you mentioned in another thread, this is a great example of its purpose.  This is not an insecure feature, as the idea is that only you should have the password to your account, and therefore only you can login to it. If you use the custom master password, you will be prompted for it upon logging in so that Espionage can unlock folders that are set to auto-unlock.

Along with that, you shouldn't have "Lock On Quit" set for any of the associations.

It's important that if you have any folders set to auto-unlock that you enable the screensaver password (this can be done from the Security System Preferences).  That will protect your Addresses, even if your laptop is stolen while the folder is unlocked.  As I mentioned, Espionage 2.0.8 has the Address Book template to auto-unlock the folder by default, but if you created it with a previous version you should turn it on yourself (and don't forget to disable "Lock On Quit" for all of the associated applications).

Espionage 2 / Re: Quicken Protection
July 05, 2009, 12:35:27 PM
We haven't tested Espionage with Quicken (as we don't have a copy of it), so it's difficult for us to know what the situation is.

Can you try the following:

  • Download this: ravedog.command.zip
  • Double-click the archive to extract the command file
  • Double-click the command file, follow the instruction.

Copy/paste all of the output from the Terminal into your response.

Espionage 2 / Re: 'More' contextual menu disabled

That's correct, it will only lock unlocked, Espionage'd folders. In a future update we'll have a "Send to Espionage..." contextual menu.

Once the trial ends and you open up Espionage it will give you the opportunity to register it or uninstall it (which will restore your folders back to normal).

Hi Alain! Thank you for offering to help localize Espionage into French!

We are in fact planning on localizing Espionage into many languages, including French, but it may take a little while before we get to that point because right now the UI is changing rapidly and will continue to do so for a bit of time, and our developmental efforts are not focused on localization right now.

Rest assured though that we will get to it, and when we do I will keep you in mind. Thanks again!  :)

Of course, just uncheck the relevant checkbox in Espionage's General preferences. :-)

Espionage 2 / Re: it unlocks but will not relock

Are all of the application associations for the Mail for set to "Lock On Quit"? You can check this by selecting the Mail folder in Espionage and clicking "Edit Application Associations", and then checking to make sure that all of the applications in that list have that checkbox enabled (and make sure that Mail as associated with the Mail folder).

Thank YOU for supporting it! :-)

That's a pretty amusing misspelling... thanks for pointing it out! :-)
#671
Hmm... looks like you helped me find a bug, the code for adding items to the ignore list though Espionage checks for duplicates, but the code for adding it through the password prompt does not.  Therefore it's possible they're identical, we'll fix it, you can just remove any duplicates. :-)

Yes, just hover your mouse over the entry:

Thank you for the kind words!

To answer your first question, yes it should be possible. We've had customers encrypting hundreds of gigabytes of data with Espionage without problems, and this shouldn't be surprising because Espionage uses the same system tools that Apple's Disk Utility uses to create encrypted disk images.

There are just two things to check before proceeding with this:

  • Close all applications and documents that are accessing files in that folder before encrypting it.
  • If the folder is 800GB, then check to make sure that you have *at least* another 800GB to spare on that drive.

The reason for #2 is because Espionage has a "no deletion policy", meaning it contains no code that will cause it to directly delete any of your files. Instead, after encrypting a folder it will move the original to the trash to let you decide what should be done with it (e.g. back it up, secure delete it, etc.).

If that's a problem then here's what you can do:

  • Move the files that you want encrypted to some other location (e.g. another drive).
  • In Espionage's advanced preferences, set the Minimum Image Capacity to the capacity that you want the folder to have (e.g. 900GB => 921600MB).
  • Create an empty folder at the location that you want the resulting encrypted folder to be.
  • Encrypt this folder with Espionage, making sure to set its encryption to sparsebundle before proceeding.
  • After the folder encrypts, unlock it and transfer all of the files into it from the location where you moved them.

Quote from: "Jaguar"2.)  On external drives that do not stay connected to the computer at all times is it possible to lock the folders using Espionage?

Yes.

Quote from: "Jaguar"3.)  I sync with MobileMe, does Espionage have any problems syncing with MobileMe?

We have received reports of previous versions having issues with MobileMe's sync. The latest version of Espionage is supposed to address them, and although we've tested it with MobileMe Sync and everything seems fine, it's still possible that something could go wrong. Therefore if you expect to use MobileMe Sync with Espionage'd folders (e.g. Address Book), it's strongly recommend that you make sure to use Espionage's built-in backups. Actually, it's always strongly recommend to use Espionage's built-in backups, regardless of the situation. ;-)

You can add items to the ignore list directly from the password prompt:

Unfortunately it appears that the nearest Western Union has now become a Publix, we can take Money Orders though if that works for you.  You can send it here:
