Espionage 2 / Re: Critical Alert

I'm sorry to hear that you're having troubles with one of your encrypted folders. Could you please tell us more about how you are accessing the folder, what real folder you have encrypted and what you have stored there? Once the folder has been unlocked, nothing about Espionage should be getting in the way of Microsoft Office components.

I take it that everything was working fine at one point and then you started seeing errors... first the error 1 and then it changed to be error 6?

Please let me know as many details as you can.

Espionage 2 / Re: Feature request: synch function
April 26, 2011, 05:31:46 PM
Thanks for the idea! Since there are 'tons' of folder synchronizers out there on the Mac -- some free (and worth every penny) and some that cost you something (and sometimes not worth it), you can have an encrypted folder on your Mac's hard drive, and a "matching" one on your external USB stick (or whatever) and then when they're both unlocked -- use one of these tools to synchronize. Synching in and of itself is something that might not be what we'd reach for to implement over some of the other security-related and user interface changes we have in the pipeline. We'll keep it in mind though, so thanks again!

Quote from: "xfile80303"Understood, but couldn't all those background tasks be notified similarly (if not identically) to a request to "eject" (unmount) the volume?

Unfortunately, OS X does not provide for a safe, consistent way for any tasks -- background or otherwise -- to stop what they are doing at a moment's notice "cleanly". Unmounting is very specific: no files may be open, and without a clean stop and proper closure of files things could get messy: that's why OS X doesn't allow an unmount in those cases without "forcing" processes to quit -- leaving potential updates to never be made. Even the OS X processing done at logout and shutdown time can be interrupted because a process doesn't stop when it's asked, and they're being asked "nicely".

We'll certainly keep your request in mind in the event that OS X can handle this kind of request properly and without error to your data.

I'm sorry you're having some troubles backing up your encrypted folder.

Espionage uses a command-line tool 'rsync' to perform the backups and for whatever reason, it's failing from time to time for you. Do you have better success right after you've logged into your OS X account (or rebooted)? Once you see this start to fail, have you found anything that 'clears it up' for a while?

The issue may lie on your Mac, or have something to do with your Google Docs account. Without exposing any credential information, what have you selected as your Espionage Backup location and is it always mounted on this Mac?

It might help us to see the exact rsync error message from the system log to understand what's wrong.

You can watch this video to see how to get that message, or download and run this diagnostic tool (and be sure to mention in it this thread if you do).

Thanks, Peter, for both having success at straightening out whatever the initial migration issue was for you, as well as giving the forum readers another reminder: when in doubt (or you 'mess' with the system-level components of Espionage): reboot. It just feels so unnatural to reboot a Mac but for iSpy that's the only way to get things truly kickstarted.

If we can be of help, please let us know!

Thanks for your additional feedback, Levi.

Locking the folder can only be done when all files in it are closed. For "well-behaving" applications that should be no problem, but how anything might react is more up to them than to anything we might do.

Have you experimented with the Application Associations setting for "Lock on quit"? With this, you should be able to direct Espionage to lock the BBEdit folder when you quit BBEdit (or any other application(s) of your choosing).

Quote from: "DaveS"When we purchase Espionage, is there a package that allows installation on multiple Mac's in our family?

Great question! When you visit the store to make your purchase, just 'check' the box for the Family Pack Option -- good for up to 5 family members running Espionage in their accounts.

Espionage 2 / Re: A suggestion, A possibility
April 11, 2011, 12:19:12 PM
Your points are understandable, yet OS X doesn't provide a universal way to "nicely" ask for an application to quickly quit (certainly not without the possibility of prompts about saving unsaved documents, etc.). Until the application and anything else using the files encrypted by Espionage have closed all the files in a given protected folder, the folder cannot go into it's stable-state locked condition. Perhaps if someday OS X provides for that, we can reexamine how Espionage behaves in the situation you're describing.

One other key point to make: physical access to your computer gives the 'bad guys' so much power. That's why we're saying that if you use the screen saver requiring your password as a line of defense that your OS X account password needs to be a good one... keep them out to the point of them giving up. At some point they'll reboot the system to look for an easier way to find stuff of interest and there they'll find nothing but the encrypted and locked folders that Espionage setup for you.

Espionage 2 / Re: iDrive as Cloud backup

Quote from: "artisfun"Working on a backup exercise at 2am is probably not the best time.
I went back and changed the setting for Excluding hidden files/folders to Allow hidden files/folders.  Removed iDriveDaemon from Whitelisted.  And the backup of the EspionageBackups runs fine.   :D

You know, 2AM is a choice time for some of us but yes -- backup strategy implementations do need your full and undivided attention. :)

I'm glad you got things working, and thanks for sharing the specifics!

Thanks for the update! Like Dave and yourself, many of us have some hidden folders in our home folder. While most of the application developers don't keep anything sensitive in them, and know to not have plain-text passwords 'lying about' it is done more often than I like to think about.

Please let us know if this procedure doesn't work for you.

Espionage 2 / Re: MS Outlook 2011 App Template

Quote from: "fauxpaux"Will there be a MS Outlook 2011 application template coming soon?

Luckily it seems I know the probably solution for this problem. And I understood this fact when one tool had rescued me couple weeks ago. It is the following program - how to restore notes from outlook 2003 .pst.

Was there a particular problem with the blog post instructions that caused a need to use or recommend this tool? The link you included was for a non-Mac application, so it would be nice to know what trouble, if any, you observed on your Mac system while using Espionage.
