Espionage 2 / Re: Support for Growl 1.3.x
March 16, 2012, 11:37:19 AM
Hi Bruce, thanks for your input.
I assume even if you manage to corrupt Espionage your data will not be at peril, because the data is stored in encrypted disk images, which are in fact completely stand alone entity. Even if you uninstall Espionage the data will still be there.

So in case you end up with non functioning Espionage, uninstall it by deleting these files:
/Users/[your username]/Library/Application Support/Espionage
/Users/[your username]/Library/LaunchAgents/com.taoeffect.EspionageHelper.plist
/System/Library/Extensions/iSpy.kext
/Library/iSpy
/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.taoeffect.ispyd.plist
/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.taoeffect.Espionage.plist (might not exist)
/Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.taoeffect.Espionage (might not exist)

restart your Mac, install Espionage again and just drag the protected folders back to Espionage, it will ask you for each folders password, but after that you are back in game.

Still as this is kind of hacking, you are indeed doing it on your own risk.

Espionage 2 / Re: Support for Growl 1.3.x

Hi Bruce,
I tested the Growl 1.3.3 for you and no luck.
Here is what I did.
I had Growl 1.2.2, switched Espionage to use it, and it worked fine.
Then Downloaded Growl 1.3.x (the current version), and uninstalled the Legacy version 1.2.2 as Growl suggested.
Rebooted the Mac.
I tried Espionage, there were no notifications showing up.
I followed the instructions written here http://www.ninjadesk.com/featured/fixin ... os-x-lion/ to upgrade the Growl Framework (I find it strange that the link points to SDK 1.2.2, though).
Once I replaced the Growl Framework folder I started Espionage once again, still no notifications.
I rebooted the Mac, started Espionage again, now it uses build in Espionage Notifications, in spite Growl notification set in the Espionage Preferences.
Unless you have some other way to upgrade the Framework, or a link to a different SDK, this would be it.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Hello Texas-al
Normally you will be protecting folders inside your user folder. And the folders inside your user folder are by default not readable to other users.
So it depends on your folder permission settings and where is the folder which you protected.
However, even if the folder itself is readable, your protected folder should be in an encrypted disk image which has a password on its own. So even if the other users could see your encrypted disk image, without a password she/he cannot open it.

If this does not answer your question, then please specify the path in which your protected folder is placed and then I can give you further instructions what do I need to understand the situation.

Cheers,
Zsolt

Espionage 2 / Re: encrypt individual mailboxes?

Hello Butterfly0013,
Thanks for your input.
I tested this too, and I'm not sure why it was originally claimed that this is not possible.
As far as I know, it is not even needed to put the folder on the desktop, you can leave it where it is i.e in ~/Library/Mail

Hello mgns,
I took over support from Greg.
This thread is about global menu not working, and it seems that your problem is that the folders are not automatically unlocking when you start the application (Firefox and Chrome).
So please clarify, what is exactly your problem?
And if it is the later one, do you have any other folder with application association which works fine?
Are the Firefox and Chrome in the application association of the respective folder?
If yes, can you please first remove them, save the changes, and the add them again, then test if it helped.

Cheers,
Zsolt

Hi Bruce, I'm not sure what did you mean.
Are you using growl now?
Does it work fine with Espionage?
Which version do you use?
Which version do you want to use, or to which version do you want to update?
Pls clarify,
Thanks

No prob, this is why I'm here for.
Good luck with upgrade, and backup, or even better, clone your disk before going for upgrade. Borrow an external USB of sufficient size, and download Carbon Copy Cloner, let it do a full clone, once done go ahead with upgrade. If anything goes bad, just boot from clone, and make another clone but this time from external to internal disk, and you are back to where you were before the upgrade.
It is faaaaar less stressful then fixing the things, and still does not limit you to try to fix them but if you fail to succeed then you just boot, clone and you are safe.

Hello,

I assume that "espionage file that existed in the directory is no longer recognized" means that the folder is not present in Epsionage window any more, if my assumption is correct, just drag the folder to espionage window, and it should recognize that it was "Espionaged", and will ask you for the folder password, enter it, and you should be done.
Also check if the application associations were properly added, if there was any.

Let me know if you need further help,

Cheers

Hello,
this is what I found in one of the posts on this forum:

####
during operating system upgrades (and even "patches"), the OS X Software Update utility and the script it follows is going to presume a lot of things about your system. One of those might be that there be unencumbered access to files, folders, applications and a whole host of other things — some of which may be replaced outright by the upgrade. You really don't even know what applications may be run as a part of an upgrade. And for upgrades that require a reboot as part of the installation you can be assured that most applications will be quit before files are being moved, etc.

Not having all your folders for Apple's applications/utilities available to the upgrade may cause the upgrade to make assumptions and create new, empty replacements for them as the upgrade runs.
####

And I completely agree with it. OS X Installation assumes it has full rights on everything and Espionage could stand in the way here.
So yes, please unlock all folders by removing them from Espionage and then add them after upgrade again.

Hope this helps,
Rgds
