Hi,

I have been using Espionage to encrypt my email on a snow leopard machine, I am using Mail.app

Nearly everyday Spotlight seems to be re-indexing my entire mail archive, ie it takes 5 minutes. Is this the fault of Espionage ? I never noticed this behaviour before using Espionage.

Are you perchance using Leopard (10.5)? On Leopard (not Snow Leopard), Spotlight will re-import (not re-index) folders when they are unlocked, into its global Spotlight index so that the folder's contents are searchable. On 10.5 this takes longer than on 10.6, and the time it takes to re-import the folder's individual index into the global index varies depending on the folder's size and the overall performance of the computer.

Thanks Will,

Try this:

  • Quit Mail, but unlock all of its folders (Mail and Mail Downloads)
  • Open the Terminal application in /Applications/Utilities
  • Copy/paste the following text into it and press return:
    mdutil -E "/Volumes/EspionageMounts/wfm2/704606979/Mail"
  • Now do the same with this command:
    mdutil -E "/Volumes/EspionageMounts/wfm2/704606979/Mail Downloads"
  • Wait at least 20 minutes, leaving the computer running and the folders unlocked, and then open Mail

Hopefully that should reset the Spotlight index and fix it.
