Espionage 3 / Re: Sync Data folder using chronsync
January 17, 2014, 03:52:32 AM
Thanks,

Is it better to sync files in the mounted volume when they are unlocked? Would this allow bidirectional sync to take place?
Or is bidirectional sync to be avoided at all times?
Does dropbox handle things better?

What does the folder Temp in Data contain? It is present on one computer but not the other

Espionage 3 / Sync Data folder using chronsync
January 16, 2014, 01:57:28 PM
Hi

Can I sync the ~/Library/Application Support/com.taoeffect.Espionage3 between two macs using a program such as chronsync?

I want to keep all the disk images in sync on both macs. If it is possible should the images be locked or unlocked at the time of sync?

If this is not advisable, is it better to move the disk images to a different folder on my mac and then sync that folder?
A related question, are there any disadvantages to storing the disk images in a location other than the Data folder?

Quote from: "zsolt"The V3 does support custom location of the disk image, so in case you are using different location then the default Application Support/Espionage/Data, then make sure you backup that location too.

Thanks

Presumably, if using Time Machine default settings, everything will be backed up automatically without changing/selecting any options at all?

Quote from: "zsolt"The disk image can be backed up no matter it is locked or unlocked. There is a slight chance for invalid backup if the data is written to the folder at the very same moment the Backup is saving the image, but unless you use the folder for some continuously writing purpose, you should be fine.

Another question: If the folder is kept unlocked most of the time and new data gets written to the folder, when does the disk image update/change to reflect this new data? Does it happen straight away? Or after a set time? Or do I need to lock the folder for the changes to be reflected in the disk image?

Espionage 3 / Backups

How do the disk images in Espionage3 get backed up?
I know that time machine etc can be used, but does it matter if the relevant folder is locked or unlocked (and the disk image mounted)?

If the folder is unlocked, what gets backed up if you are using time machine? Is it the folder contents, unencrypted or just the disk image.

On a related question is it possible to unlock the disk image for the folder without using espionage e.g if there was some problem with espionage3? It was possible with espionage2 where you could enter the diskimage/folder password to unlock it

Espionage 3 / Re: Invalid password

Thanks Greg.
I hadn't encrypted anything yet, because I couldn't get past the initial unlock screen.

I've trashed the database3 file and the same issue persists.
I've tried with another password and it now works.
If I try with my existing password that I used to use I get the same error.

I wonder if it doesn't like that password for some reason. It was long and included a few symbols

Ok, just tried the following:
Restarted computer
Repaired permissions
Uninistalled Espionage 3 and re-installed

Still get same error: Invalid password

Is there a maximum number of characters for the password?
Are any characters e.g symbols not recognised?

I don't get any errors during setup or choosing the password but I'm unable to unlock and use Espionage 3 with the exact same password I have just chosen....

Espionage 3 / Invalid password
May 30, 2012, 09:31:34 AM
Hi
I've been trying to upgrade to Espionage 3.
I unprotected/decrypted all my folders in Espionage 2 and then uninstalled using the uninstaller.
I then installed Espionage 3 trial and set it up. Chose a strong password- same one I've been using
When I go to unlock Espionage in the menubar, it says "invalid password".

I then uninstalled Espionage 3 and went through the setup process again, and chose a different strong password.
I still get the same error and I'm sure that I'm entering the correct password.

Any thoughts?

Hi
Long time user of Espionage 2, just stumbled across Espionage 3.

I can't see any release notes, or the differences between 2 and 3.

It would be great if the new features could be publicised fully. The help page at: http://www.espionageapp.com/EspionageHe ... s/new.html simply says everything is new but doesn't really tell us anything about the app

Thanks

EDIT:

Found some more info at http://www.espionageapp.com/ but detailed release notes would still be helpful.

Some questions:
1. It looks like app association has disappeared? Is there any way around this? It was one of the best features
2. How does backup work? Is the built in Espionage backups feature still functional.
3. Is Time Machine backup better implemented? e.g do you still need to consider what state the folder is in prior to backing up, e.g unlocked/locked etc
4. Has the Lion bug that restored all windows e.g Mail prior to launching Espionage been dealt with or is it no longer an issue as app associations don't exist anymore

Espionage 2 / Re: Mail.app mailboxes missing
August 02, 2011, 02:59:46 AM
I wonder if this is actually related to "restore windows after restart" option in Lion.

I had the same problem yesterday after a restart, Mail had already tried restoring the previous windows, before the Mail folders had been unlocked (although it happened very quickly on my Macbook Air). All of my Mail folders were missing except Mobileme.

Rebooting did not help, needed to restore Mail folders from a backup

Restore windows after restart and Espionage don't work together.
Yesterday, most of my mailboxes were missing in Mail when it launched before Espionage had unlocked the folders.

Rebooting did not fix the issue for me, I needed to restore the Mail folders from a backup

Quote from: "greg"Yes, add SuperDuper! to the blacklist.

Will this have the same effect?

What I want to do is perform scheduled backups using SuperDuper and for SuperDuper to ignore my Espionage folders, regardless of whether they are mounted or not.

But ideally, I'd like SuperDuper to backup the Espionage backups themselves which are already on my Macbook hard drive.

Thanks

Hi

Preventing time machine from backing up espionage folder's is straightforward.

Is there a way of stopping superduper doing the same thing? straightforward or not

Thanks

Espionage 2 / What does this alert mean?
October 23, 2010, 03:42:46 PM
Hi

Very occasionally I get this alert for some encrypted folders:

Alert!
Will not delete folder "Xxx" because it's not empty! Renamed it to "Xxx-saved"

Its not always the same folder can be a different one. "Xxx-saved" is an unencrypted folder, usually in the same location as the mounted encrypted folder. It may contain 1 or 2 items and I think remains accessible when the original folder locked.

No problems with the original encrypted folder or its data. I have been deleting "Folder-saved" without consequence

Just wondering what might be causing this and how to avoid it

Espionage 2 / Re: Backup strategy
October 11, 2010, 02:47:03 PM
Hi

Sorry to bring this up again....

Can the backup destination (for espionage's built in backups) be on the main internal Macbook hard drive- i.e. the one where the Espionage folders are located in the first place?

Just wondering if I could do the above, and then ask TimeMachine to backup my hard drive- excluding my espionaged folders but including the espionage backups? Or will this cause problems?

Also, do the espionage backups take up the same size as the sparsebundle or are they the size that the sparsebundle might grow to (i.e the maximum size)

Espionage 2 / Chronosync and espionage
September 24, 2010, 03:27:03 PM
Hi

I want to sync an espionage folder using chronosync.
I've read your tips page on using chronosync, but want to clarify the following point: "never do a bi-directional sync with an  espionage folder"

Can i therefore perform a left to right sync, and then perform a separate right to left sync a few minutes later, rather than using chronosync's built in bi-directional sync.

What are the problems with using bidrectional sync in the locked folder mode?
