Espionage 2 / Re: Corrupted Backup Folders

Alright, I guess I'm going to create a copy of the Time Capsule hdd and then just completely erase the Time Capsule hdd and restore it form the copy.

Except you have any last advice?

I tried to see how deep into the backup folders i can get with the Terminal so I went:

cd /Volumes/Data/espionage_backup/EspionageBackups/user/-503038705
ls
SyncServices
cd SyncServices
ls
---------> this resulted in making the Time Capsule hdd start doing the noise that hdds do when you copy large files, and resulted in the Finder becoming "Application not responding"

Edit: And also, no output in the Terminal window, it just keeps going and going and going.

Thanks for that very detailed explanation! Yes, Espionage currently does not have anything to do with that problem, however, I highly suspect that it was the cause of the problem back when it created the backup - because something must have gone wrong :/

I have just followed your instructions.

The structure of the backup folder is the following: volumes/data(this is the Time Capsule hdd)/espionage_backup/EspionageBackups/user/numbers/...

These were my steps:

cd volumes/data/espionage_backup
ls -l
total 0
ls
EspionageBackups
sudo rm -rf
Enter password

-> nothing happened. Folders are still there :/

Hey there,

thanks, for the reply, and excuse my explanation, I'll give it another shot:

The situation was the following: I had Espionage V2 installed on Snow Leopard and it was configured inside the Espionage preferences to do backups  - no Time Machine was involved, the backup location was set to my Time Capsule HDD which functioned just as a network HDD - there was no Time Machine backup involved, I had not activated Time Machine at all.

Then along came OSX Lion with the improved File Vault - which was fine for me, so I did not need to use Espionage anymore. Therefore, to get my machine ready to upgrade to OSX Lion, I wanted to uninstall Espionage. So I restored the encrypted folders and then uninstalled Espionage. Which went totally fine.

However, what was left after the uninstallation of Espionage 2 was the backup folder on my Time Capsule HDD. Naturally, I wanted to delete that one as well, since I had no need for it anymore. However, this folder is corrupted (I'm not sure if that's the right expression for how that folder behaves) - I cannot delete it, I cannot open the folder in Finder - it doesn't give me an error, it just keeps on loading, and loading, and loading.

Like you know, the backup folder is several sub-folders deep, and at one point, before reaching the folder where there are 3 folders inside that say something like "THIS FOLDER IS CONTROLLED BY ESPIONAGE....", it stops in an endless loop of loading. The deepest I can get is one folder where it goes:

EspionageBackups->user->number->SyncServices-> endless loading. The other two folder stop at:
EspionageBackups->user->number->endless loading

So in a nutshell: After the uninstall of Espionage V2 I am stuck with a backup folder that cannot be opened, cannot be re-imported into Espionage after re-installation of Espionage, and cannot be deleted.

I hope this clarifies my situation?

Espionage 2 / Corrupted Backup Folders
August 06, 2012, 08:23:54 PM
OSX Snow Leopard, Espionage 2: Backup of all encrypted folders to my Time Capsule HDD.

Now that backup folder is corrupted. I had first uninstalled Espionage, rebooted, then wanted to delete the backup folder on the Time Capsule - endless and endlessly letting the deletion run for hours, even overnight. No result. Stopped the deletion after 16 hours or so.

The folder is visible in Finder, but for example if I right click->get info, the size cannot be calculated, it will load forever. If I go deeper into the backup folder, there is one point at which it wont go any further - e.g. espionageBackups->user->number->SyncServices->endless loading, not showing the contents.

So whatever I do, it always ends in either endless loading of the folder, or endless trying to delete it with no results.

I tried installing the latest Espionage 2 again and add these folders via drag&drop, like it is advised in your help section, so that Espionage "should realise that these are encrypted folders" -  but Espionage just crashes.

Any advice on this situation would be really awesome, because I'm getting a bit worried that this might affect the integrity of the Time Capsule HDD. (which works perfectly fine outside the Espionage backup folder)

Thanks guys

Espionage 2 / Re: Option to not open finder on unlock?

Hi greg,

cool, give it a thought. Not sure if it would even have to be integrated into the UI, I thought a checkbox in the preferences would do the trick.

Open folder in finder on unlock? y/n

Have a nice weekend ^_^

Espionage 2 / Option to not open finder on unlock?
February 05, 2011, 04:12:52 AM
Hey guys,

just a quick suggestion: It would be great to have an option to stop Espionage opening a finder window if you unlock a folder through the Espionage menu icon in the menu bar.

If I unlock a folder through that menu it is usually because I want to save a file to that folder.

No idea how hard or easy that is to realize, just thought I could let you know, maybe you like the idea.

Take care

I am backing up to the Time Capsule drive. Using Espionages backup.

What data does your tool collect?

Sorry Greg, that is correct of course. I greatly appreciate the support and responsiveness here. It is also true that the software seems to be very solid, I did not fear loss of any data etc. Now that I have removed Safari and then had this issue with the backup, it just got on my nerves.

Is not normal that it takes 10 minutes to backup the Mail folders? Again, I have added it via the application template. Then after the 10 minutes it says I should back it up again because it cannot guarantee the integrity.

It's just that I have spent so much time in the past few month for it waiting to unlock, backing up 10 minutes, saying then after these 10 minutes I should please back it up again and thus being unable to use the app for another 10 minutes... it just tipped me off right now.

It's unfortunate to hear that you do not know what is wrong here. I do not want to install any diagnosis tools.

Backups are taking 5 minutes now for just 1 folder, this is ridiculous. If I quit Mail and the backup runs, this means I cannot reopen Mail for 10 minutes. I have already removed Safari from Espionage because i do not want to waste any more time figuring out what is wrong.

I have recommended this software so far to a lot of people, I will not do so any longer. Software like this has to be rock solid, I do not feel comfortable with it anymore.

It's a 2010 13' MB Pro. It is only 3 months old and I did not install any Anti-Virus software, nor DriveGenius. I will restart now to check it with Activity Monitor.

Okay, just did that. Result: Activity Manager freezes during the unlock. So no data I could give you.

Hey Greg, thanks for your time looking into this.

Unfortunately the situation is a bit different: It always takes 30seconds to unlock the "safari" folder after boot-up. On top of that, I always lock all folders before shut-down (and Safari is set to lock on quit as well).

For me, Espionage behaved like this since day 1 using it. At first I did not notice it, because the time it takes to unlock this one folder seems to increase every day. And then at first it did not bother me that it took 5 seconds to unlock. But waiting 30 seconds now before I can use Safari is not the most fun thing I can think of :/

I already have removed Safari from Espionage and then added it again - but that did not have any positive effect.

I am really clueless about what I can do.

Espionage 2 / Safari unlock really slow
December 05, 2010, 06:50:12 AM
Hey guys,

I am using Espionage since 3 months now and am very happy with it. However, unlocking Safari got slower and slower until the point that now I am asking you guys for help.

I am using both the newest and up-to-date version of OS X and Espionage.

I have added Safari with the application template provided. The locked folders are "Safari", "com.apple.safari" and another "Safari". So 3 in total.

If I open Safari and then enter my password, "Safari" and "com.apple.safari" are unlocked within 1 second. And then it takes about 20 seconds until the other "Safari" is unlocked. During these 20 seconds I can still move the mouse cursor, but nothing else. No other application will open or respond. It seems to me that it takes longer and longer until "safari" is unlocked now. However, if I then lock Safari and unlock it again, all 3 folders are unlocked quickly. So it only slows down for the first time I unlock it after boot-up.

All other applications/folders are unlocked very quickly. Like the Mail application for example or the other folders I have encrypted.

I wondered if I shall do this: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=99#p229
But before I start messing around, I just wanted to ask for your assessment.

I would be very grateful if you guys can help me out here.

Best,
Slash

PS: Awesome software nevertheless  :)
