I could not resist to use this 1990s-html-tag. So moving. Such fun.

lol! I didn't know this forum supported that. :P

Hey, that's great news. Way to go! I also just read today's blog entry of yours about this topic.  :)

And thank you for pointing out the union mounts to me — I didn't know the Mac had them, too (they do still exist). Very useful.

Keep up the good work,
tzugo

Glad to hear of your approval! :)

QuotePS: Are you going to encrypt the Folder Action scripts along with the Folder Sets database in the upcoming or a future version of Espionage? If one uses a Folder Action script to further obfuscate one's sparsebundles that code needs protection, too, and the best and safest place I can think of should be the encrypted Folder Set definition...

Folder Actions are already encrypted along with the rest of the information about the folders. You could store a script that's run within one of your other encrypted folders...

Espionage 3 / POLL: How's our "source available" policy?
February 26, 2014, 06:13:59 PM
Instead of giving out Espionage's source to anyone who wants it, we've chosen to offer Espionage's source to proven security professionals only, free of charge, and even with a complimentary license if they need it for their review.

We chose this route for the following reasons:

  • We cannot update Espionage without enough license sales.
  • We cannot provide you with professional support without enough license sales.

Without your financial support (a purchased license), Espionage would be either dead completely, or it would be like TrueCrypt (which is free and open source, but unusable).

We're happy with our current balance of "open for professionals" vs "closed enough to stay alive", but I personally am curious to hear your opinion. Feel free to share it with us here.

(If you'd like more info before making your choice, read through this blog post.)

I honestly do not understand what the OP is trying to say, so ... forgive me, but I have nothing of value to add.

Espionage 3 / Re: Sync Data folder using chronsync
January 17, 2014, 10:33:52 AM
Quote from: socrates on January 17, 2014, 03:52:32 AMIs it better to sync files in the mounted volume when they are unlocked? Would this allow bidirectional sync to take place?

Ah, I forgot about this option. Yes, you can do a bi-directional sync on the unlocked folder contents (I've edited my previous reply to reflect this).

This will probably be slower though, because the operating system has to encrypt and decrypt the data as it's being copied.

QuoteDoes dropbox handle things better?

Dropbox does not handle things better, but you can use it, just follow these instructions.

QuoteWhat does the folder Temp in Data contain? It is present on one computer but not the other

Nothing of value, you can ignore it. It's just used by Espionage during initial folder encryption to host temporary folder mountpoints. It doesn't actually contain any data.

Quote from: socrates on January 16, 2014, 01:57:28 PMCan I sync the ~/Library/Application Support/com.taoeffect.Espionage3 between two macs using a program such as chronsync?

I want to keep all the disk images in sync on both macs. If it is possible should the images be locked or unlocked at the time of sync?

Yes, it's possible, provided that you do it one of two ways:

Option 1:

  • Make sure both folders are locked before you sync.
  • Sync only in one direction. Do *NOT* do a bi-directional sync!
Option 2:

  • Make sure both folders are unlocked before you sync.
  • Sync the unlocked folder contents, *NOT* the disk images! You can do bi-directional syncs with this option.
QuoteA related question, are there any disadvantages to storing the disk images in a location other than the Data folder?

Not really, unless you place them in a folder where they will be automatically and incorrectly synced by some other application.

Oh, also, do not store them on a network mounted volume. External drives are OK, network mounts can be very slow and potentially result in problems.

Hi Peter!

You're stumbling on one of the reasons why we removed Application Templates from Espionage 3. Managing a large, ever changing list of applications that move their data around was taxing our development and support time.

I don't have my Calendars app encrypted, so I haven't personally investigated where its data now resides, but it has probably moved from OS update to update.

One of the major changes in Lion (I think it was Lion), was Sandboxing. This took the application data of many apps (most of Apples, and all of those on the App Store), out of ~/Library and ~/Library/Application Support, and moved it into ~/Library/Containers/...[some subfolder]...

Not all of them were moved though (for example, Mail). Worse, some apps were renamed. If you recall, Calendars used to be called iCal, and it might still be storing some of its data under an "iCal"-type folder. For example, this folder does exist on my computer: ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iCal

I would search all of these locations for folders that contain either "Calendar" or "iCal" in their name:

  • ~/Library
  • ~/Library/Application Support
  • ~/Library/Containers
To make things even more confusing, sometimes the folders inside of ~/Library/Containers will use symbolic links (aliases), to link back to folders within ~/Library. Additionally, apps that using sync features sometimes need completely unrelated folders encrypted ("MobileMeSync", "iCloud", and other folders with "Sync" in their name).

With enough futzing you will probably be able to figure it out, but it might take a while. Remember that you'll probably need to encrypt multiple folders for this one application, and then use Folder Actions to link them up together so that unlocking and locking one folder automatically locks and unlocks the rest (and launches or quits the app).

If you decide it's not worth your time to find exactly which Calendars-related folders need to be encrypted, you may want to consider enabling FileVault instead, or using a different calendar app.

Happy New Year everyone! Official support for Espionage 2 has now ended, however, support will still be offered here in the following form:

  • By the community.
  • By Tao Effect representatives on their own time and out of the goodness of their hearts (if they'd like). :)

Hi there,

Quote from: lifeatsea on November 12, 2013, 12:35:02 PMI made a copy of one of my V3 folders as instructed by Tao effect ( see screen shot)

Sorry, I don't know what screenshot you're referring to, none is attached to your post, nor is there a link to one.

What instructions were you following? What did you copy?

Please see the help for details on how to backup E3 disk images: http://www.espionageapp.com/EspionageHelp/pages/usg-backup.html

Regarding the unique passwords for each disk image: as long as you have a copy of Espionage's database, and you place the disk images where it expects them to be, you don't need to remember any of those passwords, just your master password(s).

The database is located here:

/Users/[your username]/Library/Application Support/com.taoeffect.Espionage3/database

Espionage also creates backups of it just in case the database gets corrupted. Those backups are stored here:

/Users/[your username]/Library/Application Support/com.taoeffect.Espionage3/Backups

Finally, if you absolutely must know the password to the disk images, simply click the "Copy password" button in the folder details view.

No problem. :)

(I actually remember struggling with this very issue a year ago and not coming up with a solution back then. It's worth another try though.)

That's cool but what is the progress bar chuggin' along for?  it's pulsing like it's still working on it.  Thanks

Touché. It's a weird thing with Apple's UI. Thanks for bringing this issue up, I agree it's somewhat confusing, we'll look into it.

There is no x...  See screenshot

The screenshot shows that the folder has been successfully encrypted. You should be able to unlock it now by moving the slider.
