Title: Size of images
Post by: kostas on May 30, 2015, 11:17:10 AM
I'm not sure how the various sizes indicated in the app are assigned or what exactly they stand for.

Consider the attached screenshot for instance.

What's that 1GB for?

Why was a 70MB image assigned for a 2MB file? If I reclaim the unused space clicking on the button, why doesn't the size of that image shrink?

I want to have a better understanding of what's going on here but the app doesn't make it easy for me.

Hello,

The sparse bundle disk image ha a neat feature of being able to expand it's size if needed.
The capacity of the disk image it the max size it can expand to. The size is the current size.
What might be confusing is how come it has bigger size then the amount of data it contains? This is because the Disk image has to store some metadata i.e. some information about the disk image itself. At small sizes this is more noticeable, but in general it is irrelevant because the size of this metadata is relatively small.

But let's take the example you sent:
You probably protected a folder which contained around 2.08 MB of data. When protecting a folder, we create a disk image with capacity which is around 10 bigger then the amount of data in the folder you want to protect but not less then 10 GB. So if you would protect a folder which contains 5 GB of data, we would create a disk image witch 50 GB capacity.

So this is why there are 10.15 GB available in this protected folder, i.e. disk image. This means you can add another 10 GB of data into this protected folder before Espionage will warn you that you run out of capacity. In which case you can increase the capacity by moving the slider.

The amount 68.79 MB is the current size of the disk image on your disk, meaning it contains 2MB of your protected data and another 66 MB of metadata. But if you would add now 1 GB of data into the protected folder, the size on the disk would grow to around 1GB plus maybe 100 MB being in total 1.1 GB big. Again, the amount of metadata is small in comparison to the amount of data you protect in this way.

The reclaim unused space is used if you delete a lot of data from the protected folder, because the disk image does expand automatically but will not shrink automatically. So if you had 10GB protected data and you delete 9GB, then reclaim unused space would shrink the disk image back to around 1GB.

I'm glad you seek for a better understanding, and you are very welcome to ask other questions too, this will help you use Espionage features to their full extent and also avoid any confusion leading to overall better satisfaction with the product.

Best Regards
Zsolt
