Title: FinalCut Pro X library problem
Post by: supernov on January 27, 2014, 04:14:34 AM
Hi all,

I couldn't find posts regarding FinalCut Pro X, so here it goes; I used Espionage 3 on libraries like iPhoto and iMovie and those work just fine, however FinalCut Pro X doesn't seem to like it, I can encrypt the library, but after opening it the Espionage trick doesn't work and FinalCut just creates a new library.

Is this known?

Thanks, Vincent

Hello Vincent, FCP uses several folders to store things, which one did you protect? I would like to reproduce this, but need a bit more details.

Thanks

With FinalCut Pro X, the amount of folders is quite limited, I think I have a library and backup folder and that seems to be it. The Library I wanted to protect is called "Macintosh HD's projects and events". After encrypting it it suddenly had an extension showing up, ".fcpbundle". I know it's a bundle, but was surprised to see this extension popping up (normally it's hidden). Also, I could enter it in Finder like a regular folder, while the normal behaviour is that it opens up FinalCut.

Thanks for the help! Vincent

Hello Vincent, I managed to get hold of FCP X, I will test it tomorrow and let you know the outcome.

Well, that's what I call thorough investigation into a problem! :) Thanks.

OK, so I learn every day something new. It is the 10.1 which introduced the fcpbundle, thing, the 10.0.8 which is the one I have is different. So please hold on, I have to get 10.1 now.
Thanks

OK, here it goes. Pls do the following, I do it from scratch but I think you will get the point:
- I lauch FCP, it finds no library so creates an empty one in my movies folder
- I quit FCP, move the library somewhere else, launch FCP, and it still finds it, so far so good.
- So, I create a subfolder in my movies folder, put the library into it, and launch FCP so that it recognises and records the new path
- I quit FCP, and add this folder to Espioange, the folder containing the library
- I unlock the folder and launch FCP, and it works
#############
Now, if I lock the folder, and launch FCP, it finds no library and again creates a new one.
If I now quit FCP, unlock the folder, and launch FCP, it still goes back to the newly created lib in last step, because at the moment the esp folder was locked, FCP got "unlinked" from the libraries it was using before.
If this ever happens, just quit FCP, delete the newly created library, unlock Espionage folder, and launch FCP by double-clicking the project inside the Espionage folder. If you had more then one library, you will have to double-click each, so that they get added to FCP
#############
Pls test and see if it works....

However!
I'm not sure if it is good to use an encrypted folder as target for your media, as OS X has to encrypt/decrypt the data on the fly all the time, FCP is quite data transfer hungry anyway, so this will add a quite demanding task on your CPU. I did not test, it is just my loud thinking...
Protecting finished projects by putting them into Espionage protected folder is OK, you can even open them for a quick preview in case you need them, directly from the Protected folder by double-clicking them, but to use the protected folder for an active project, you should test and see.

I hope this helps
Let me know how it went.

Hi!

Sorry, I missed the notification that you replied to this thread. Many thanks for testing this out! I think you're right that it's not very handy for video files this large while still working on them. So, I'm going to change my strategy and use Espionage for everything except the movies, I'll encrypt those using Truecrypt (if that actually is ok with FinalCut).

Thanks once again! Vincent

And ps. I'm only interested in encrypting movies, because I use an online backup service in the US as well. ;)
