Title: Prompt for Password on entering protected folder
Post by: insanekitty on February 24, 2013, 09:07:50 AM
Hi all,

I'm really sorry if this has already been asked, I purchased Espionage 3 yesterday and so far like it apart from 2 problem's that I feel could cause me to stop using it.

1. If I enter/click a protected folder, it would be nice if Espionage, came up with a prompt and asked me to enter my password for this folder set (this is very much how BoxCryptor works).
2. This I feel is much harder, if I put files into a folder that is protected (not mounted), when I unlock Espionage, it would be great if it asked me if I would like to transfer them to the protected vault.

Maybe I'm using Espionage wrongly but these two items would greatly improve my workflow and also allow me to have to lovely UI and ease of use of Espionage.

It would seem maybe feature 1 is in Espionage 2, but looking at the website that is not being developed anymore.

Thank you in advance.

Your first request is indeed matching how espionage 2 works. Some users like it some don't. If personally thing, if looking strictly from the security perspective, which is the main purpose of this application, that the behaviour of version 3 is better as it does not indicate in any way that the folder is something special, protected, containing sensitive data, etc. It looks just like an ordinary folder and will not encourage an intruder to sniff around it.

Your second request does have a point, but would break another feature which I find good, and this is that you can put some dummy files in the protected (and locked) folder, which could further make this folder even more look like an ordinary folder, say you name the folder "Holiday Pictures" and you put few photos into it. As long as it is locked, all you see are few pictures. Once you unlock it, the pictures disappear and you have access to your tax info, once locked, the pictures are back again....

Does it look better to you now?

Thanks for the reply, I do agree on both aspects here, but at the same time disagree :)

I think at the end of the day it's down to personal opinion on how one feels the app should act :)

Overall the app is great but I don't have anything to hide,and if anyone gets that close to my data then they have just got pass my main password on my File Vault drive and have access to all my other details that are not stored in 1Password. I just wish to securely encrypt my data and an easy way to be able to access the files on it;
for me it seems using BoxCryptor on local storage maybe the better way for me to go (even though it's mean't for Cloud Storage only really).

Or I could downgrade to version 2 but seen that is discontinued then it's not a viable option.

Once again thank you for the quick reply

Hello Megan, I completely agree with you, every user sees it in it's own way, I just wanted to give another point of view which might give you some new info, but it is up to you to pick the one you prefer.
I also believe that the best is for the app to give a choice and not force the user into any way of thinking, unfortunately this also means much more complex coding and sometimes making the application to complex for simple users. It is in fact in Apple's style (which I do not approve) to force users into their way with argument that they are protecting users from themselves :-)

anyway, thanks for your input and good luck with the software you pick at the end.

Espionage 2 is indeed not actively developed any more, but is working fine up to Mountain Lion, so for the time being you would be fine.
