Thank you for the detailed explanation. A few follow-on questions:

3. I am not sure what you are referring to.

4. If I have documents in the Documents folder, not in subfolders, can I encrypt them? In other words, does this mean that every document must be in a folder?

5. Sorry, I still don't understand. Are we saying that I have to unlock all Mail folders before I use Mail at any time?

I am OK with a remote session, but thought I would continue the conversation here, to help others who might be new like me.

Thanks!

Thank you for the response. I have been trying to digest it, and I'm afraid I need more clarification. I will try to respond to each of the sections you described:

It doesn't make a difference if I encrypt with FileVault or Espionage. If either fails, I lose data, correct? I am assuming that is a very rare issue with either, so it is not an issue to help me differentiate between them.

Regarding application protection, I still don't understand the difference between encrypting your data, and encrypting an application, or an application's data. The data is either encrypted, or it isn't. For my use, I am not going to pick and choose which app to encrypt, I just want to encrypt my data.

If I encrypt all my data, Mail's data will be encrypted, correct? Is there something unique about Mail that prevents this?

The bigger issue is how to use this with Undercover. Undercover says they won't work with FV on, and recommend Espionage. But the documentation for Espionage makes it seem very complicated, including the warning about 'knowing what you are doing.'

I would like to encrypt my data. I would like to use Undercover to protect myself if my machine is stolen. How can I best achieve these goals? Do I need to scrap FileVault? And is Espionage a good replacement, or do I need to go folder by folder if I use Espionage.

Thanks in advance.

I know the title sounds confusing. Sorry about that.

Former user of Espionage 2 here. I haven't used it in a while.

I have a new MBP, and am trying to clean up and make it secure. I have used Undercover for a while, as security should the computer be stolen.

I am currently using FileVault 2, which seems to run just fine.

But Undercover says not to use FV, and to use Espionage instead.

Before I purchased a new license, I made the mistake of reading the Tao Effects website, specifically about using Application sets for Mail data folders. The video states not to use this feature unless 'you know what you are doing.'

Another post on the forum says that FV and Espionage work well together, with FV handling application data.

Now I am completely confused. Can I use both Espionage and FV? If so, do I need to use the application data encryption in Espionage 3? If so, what are the 'you know what you are doing issues?'

Thank you in advance for helping me to understand!

Espionage 2 / Failed restore
February 22, 2011, 07:38:25 PM
I tried to disengage one of my folders from Espionage; in other words, I don't want it encrypted any more.

I got some sort of failed restore, and have a disk image on my desktop. I can double click and get a new folder (after I enter my password), but the data is corrupted.

I have tried reading this forum, but cannot make heads or tails of the information.

In English, what do I do at this point?

Error backing up again.

10/1/10 4:24:14 PM   com.apple.backupd[5610]   No pre-backup thinning needed: 1.30 GB requested (including padding), 22.48 GB available

This is not going to work for me. If I don't know that my backups are available, I could lose ALL my data. The 'sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't' approach is NOT backup (at least not reliable backup).

If there is a chance to fix this, please let me know. Otherwise, please be considerate and don't allow me to risk all my data. I will just not encrypt with Espionage.

Thank you for your consideration.

When I open Espionage preferences and go to 'Notifications', I have both boxes checked. I tried a backup and get no notification.

If I uncheck the Growl notifications, and do a backup, I get a notification.

If I uncheck the internal notifications, I do not get a Growl notification.

Under the Growl preferences, I have both Espionage and Espionage Helper checked.

Thoughts?

Sorry-getting the error messages frequently again. Console with the last:

As to your previous, yes, the 'Backup' menu items grayed out, and when they returned to black there was no Growl announcement. Preferences are set to show these announcements.

Thanks

I am no longer getting the error messages-hooray!

Unfortunately, I am no longer getting the Growl messages that backup completed successfully.

I let everything else settle, and then with nothing going on I opened the Console, and tried the backup from the menu. I got the following:

I am fairly confident this is related to the backup effort. Does this help?

I deleted the prior backup files. I then started and completed a new backup. I then got the same error:

Espionage 2 / I have run out of disc space
September 09, 2010, 09:34:14 PM
I have been using Espionage for approximately four months, and find it easy to use, with two problems. The first is the most pressing:

I am almost out of disc space.

I use Espionage for one program, namely DevonThink Pro, which contains most of my data. I use Espionage to encrypt the database folder, which contains six databases. I also use the backup function of Espionage, utilizing 'Enable Automatic Backup...'. I then use TM to backup my entire HD to a RAID NAS, and use an off-site cloud storage/backup system (iDrive) just in case of fire, theft, etc.

Tonight I found that my HD is almost full. I used Grand Perspective to check on what files are occupying my HD and found the two largest are:

Documents/My Data/Computer/Mac/.DEVONthink Pro Office Data.sparsebundle
Documents/My Data/Computer/Mac/EspionageBackups/Scott/-1732614186/DEVONthink Pro Office Data.sparsebundle

I do not understand the process in great detail, but the two files listed take up almost 55 GB of my HD.

How can I work around this?

Also a smaller issue is that whenever I close this program, I get an error that backups failed (error 15, I believe). If I then run backup again, it succeeds.

Thanks for any advice.

Espionage 2 / Re: Massive TM Backups
June 24, 2010, 03:09:20 PM
I want to check to make sure I have this correct-

I have to make sure, for each and every encrypted folder or archive, that I change each one of them to the same state when I know TM is going to do a backup?

If so, am I the only one that sees this is highly unpractical? I have to keep an eye on my TM schedule and rush to close every item I was using before TM starts, EVERY hour?

I am sure I must be missing something. This doesn't make sense to me.

Also, my RAID array with 1.8 TB capacity is now down to an available 85 GB. This just doesn't make sense to me, honestly.

Espionage 2 / Re: Massive TM Backups
June 18, 2010, 04:42:29 PM
OK-I followed the instructions carefully in the link you provided. It turns out that only one of these files is visible at a time in the TM preferences > options window. If the folder is locked, the folder itself shows up in this 'Excluded' folder. If the folder is unlocked, the .sparsebundle file shows up in the "Excluded" window. I hope that is the intended behavior.

My next TM backup started, and is trying to back up over 21 GB again. I started and stopped TM, both with the folder locked and unlocked, and either way it is trying to backup over 20 GB.

I would like to know what to try next.

Also, I am backing up to IDrive, an online backup, just in case there is a theft or fire at my home that destroys both my NAS and my computer. Advice on setting up to avoid these massive backups?

Thanks!

Espionage 2 / Re: Massive TM Backups
June 18, 2010, 12:07:17 PM
Greg-

Thank you for the response. Could I clarify a few issues?

Are the backups supposed to be this large? I am now backing up 40 to 60 GB per day, which just won't work, even with a large RAID NAS.

Are the backups stored in their entirety by TM, even with a small internal change?

Will there be a different option in the future? Preventing TM from backing up folders means no backup at all, unless I am mistaken. I won't be able to live with that, but I must be mistaken.

Is there something different that other people are doing, that I am missing?

Thanks!
