Title: Support for Growl 1.3.x
Post by: eblot on December 18, 2011, 05:05:01 AM
Hi,

It's been 6 months since the latest Espionage release.
However, still no support for the current version of Growl...

Is this something that can be expected soon?

Thanks.

Yeah. That's something I'm waiting as well.

Could you please lighten us up about the upcoming update if there is one.

Hello, my name is Zsolt and from now on I will be the primary support representative for product questions. Our sincere apologies for the delay that occurred (http://www.taoeffect.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=486).

At the moment the Version 3 of Espionage is in works. It will surely consider Growl 1.3.x, however as of few days ago, it seems that OS X 10.8 is bringing Growls destiny in question. So I'm not sure if the decision to go with OS X notifications rather then with growl will be made. I don't even know if Growl will be further developed, so at this time it is a wait and see game.

In the meantime, what will happen if one uses Growl to update the Growl framework of Espionage?

Hi Bruce, I'm not sure what did you mean.
Are you using growl now?
Does it work fine with Espionage?
Which version do you use?
Which version do you want to use, or to which version do you want to update?
Pls clarify,
Thanks
Zsolt

I am using Growl 1.3.3 with Espionage 2.8.13.  As you know, Espionage doesn't think that Growl is installed but Growl 1.3.x has the ability to upgrade the Growl framework of applications (it adds the new framework alongside the old so that one could revert, if necessary).  I'm not in a position currently to try to upgrade it now as the machine currently running Espionage has been running two encrypted folders for a long time and I don't want to break Espionage such that I might not be able to ever use those folders again.

Hi Bruce, thanks for clarification, I will check with the development team if this framework upgrade option is supported.
I will let you know once they come back to me.
Till then
Cheers

Hi Bruce,
I tested the Growl 1.3.3 for you and no luck.
Here is what I did.
I had Growl 1.2.2, switched Espionage to use it, and it worked fine.
Then Downloaded Growl 1.3.x (the current version), and uninstalled the Legacy version 1.2.2 as Growl suggested.
Rebooted the Mac.
I tried Espionage, there were no notifications showing up.
I followed the instructions written here http://www.ninjadesk.com/featured/fixin ... os-x-lion/ (http://www.ninjadesk.com/featured/fixing-outdated-apps-manually-to-work-with-the-new-growl-1-3-for-os-x-lion/) to upgrade the Growl Framework (I find it strange that the link points to SDK 1.2.2, though).
Once I replaced the Growl Framework folder I started Espionage once again, still no notifications.
I rebooted the Mac, started Espionage again, now it uses build in Espionage Notifications, in spite Growl notification set in the Espionage Preferences.
Unless you have some other way to upgrade the Framework, or a link to a different SDK, this would be it.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Thank you for trying it but I tried it and it DID work.

*** TRY THIS AT YOUR OWN PERIL.  NO ONE BUT YOURSELF IS RESPONSIBLE IF YOU CAN NO LONGER READ YOUR ENCRYPTED FILES OR FOLDERS!!! ***

You must have Growl 1.3.3 installed.  Earlier versions may work but I haven't tried them.
Download a copy of Growl Version Detective. (http://growl.cachefly.net/Growl%20Versi ... .1.app.zip (http://growl.cachefly.net/Growl%20Version%20Detective1.2.1.app.zip))
Open Growl Version Detective and click on the Framework tab.  Wait until the application list populates completely.
Find Espionage and select it from the list.
Click the Update FW button. If Espionage is running, Growl Version Detective will offer to quit it.
Find Espionage Helper and select it from the list.
Click the Update FW button. If Espionage Helper is running, Growl Version Detective will offer to quit it.
Relaunch Espionage.  Logging out and back in would be best.
Launch Espionage and open Preferences.  In Espionage Prefereces, select the Notifications tab and choose Use Growl for notifications.

That's it!  Next time Espionage wants to put up a notification, it will use Growl.

Hi Bruce, thanks for your input.
I assume even if you manage to corrupt Espionage your data will not be at peril, because the data is stored in encrypted disk images, which are in fact completely stand alone entity. Even if you uninstall Espionage the data will still be there.

So in case you end up with non functioning Espionage, uninstall it by deleting these files:
/Users/[your username]/Library/Application Support/Espionage
/Users/[your username]/Library/LaunchAgents/com.taoeffect.EspionageHelper.plist
/System/Library/Extensions/iSpy.kext
/Library/iSpy
/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.taoeffect.ispyd.plist
/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.taoeffect.Espionage.plist (might not exist)
/Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.taoeffect.Espionage (might not exist)

restart your Mac, install Espionage again and just drag the protected folders back to Espionage, it will ask you for each folders password, but after that you are back in game.

Still as this is kind of hacking, you are indeed doing it on your own risk.

My suggestion is that BOTH notification systems be supported unless Espionage 3 will only work with OS X 10.8 and higher.  If you will still be supporting older versions of the OS, then you MUST include both notification systems.
